I have a PS4, and I have bought the Modern Warfare 2019 game, disc version.

Since putting the disc into the PS4 this morning, it has been updating/downloading updates/fk knows what else

All I want to do is play the single player campaign mode…..and now it is downloading the “campaign pack”

Am I missing something? Back in the day, you buy a game, put the disc/cartridge in the console and play the bloody game?!

My window of opportunity to play some games after the wife went to bed is nearly over. And I’m still looking at “40 mins left” for this download.

Unfortunately COD is a massively bloated game, and everyone who has it, has experienced the same thing, big thread on it in the video games section.

Utter pain.

It's a mess, and yes, you will need to download it.

Wait until you try and play multi-player - this used to be excellent, but it's now a joke, long times between games.

Ok so I’m not being a total idiot, this is just the way it goes these days?
Maybe I’ll get to play a bit tonight!

Still unable to play. I don’t get it. Seems I need to download countless add on packs or something? I’m so confused and annoyed.

It’s one of the reasons my PS4 has got so little use over the last few years. Due to infrequent use it would take an hour to get the latest updates before I could use it.

Don't worry - the game is total dogdirt (Warzone) at the moment. Virtually unplayable due to meddling by the developers. It will eventually sort itself out, but I can't even download the campaign or mutliplayer for WZ presently.

Lots of people in a similar situation.

Give it some time, as once you get past the cheaters, it's quite good fun

That’s one of the reasons I have literally just sold mine. Only ever played cod and got fed up of each time I wanted a quick game it needed updates. Last years call of duty took me over a day to download and only took me a few hours to complete.

Does my head in! When I bought far cry 5 it was nearly 2 hours later after putting the game in as it has to download what the disc can't hold and update the console firmware at the same time!

Want to play online? That needs an update too!

It's one of the reasons that consoles are impossible to source as so many people buy them months in advance so they can be set up ahead of Christmas to enable the kids to play them. Add into that how busy the game servers are and it compounds the frustration.

I have high speed fibre to the house and the PlayStation is wired to the router but that means nothing if Sony or game dev infrastructure is white hot!

I got CoD MW shortly before Christmas and had similar problems, albeit in xbox. What I experienced:

Installed game and packs (4?) To begin with

Try to play, need to set up Activision account, done

Get as far as a screen that gives the option to open up Vanguard/warzone/CW/MW. Says I'm missing content for MW campaign/MP/Spec Ops

I eventually found if you enter the pause menu, and scroll to the end, there's an heading for 'account', and there's an option in there somewhere to look at add ons/DLC. In here were about another 7 or 8 downloads/service packs. I selected all of these

What it doesn't make clear is this doesn't download or even queue them up - all it does it make them available if you go back out of the game and enter 'manage game' where you can then select to download and install these additional packs

Once that was done, I could play it. even then the first two missions were seriously buggy.

It's a right PITA. It's only a 5 hour campaign, and spent 2 hours trying to get it to work (not including time the Xbox was just downloading/installing), including have to delete/move other game files around for what ended up around 150gb of game files

As i says that's Xbox, but hopefully helps

Good luck...

Ok thanks Jamgy, I think I have finally worked out that’s what needs doing, so it is currently downloading/installing all of those stupid add ons…….maybe I’ll get to actually play it tomorrow.

CoD has been like it for years. Unless you’ve taken a big break from gaming I’m not sure what you are expecting.

Ultimately it’s faster to download a 100GB game with updates included than it is to install from a few Blu-rays and then download updates on top.

Triple A titles are all live services with opportunities to extract money from customers over a period of time. You need to look at indie games if you want to just download and play them.

This is the exact reason my PS4 had probably only been used for about 3hrs since I bought it a couple of years ago the whole update carryon is ludicrous.

I totally get the irony of how if I used it more then there would be less of the 2hr updates needed etc…

My daughters Switch however, pick up and play simplicity - I’ll happily take the compromises for being able to just “play” as and when I want!

It really is absurd. This is the first time I'd plugged my PS4 in for over a year, decided to buy the 2019 COD as my best mate said it was excellent. But it ends up taking ALL weekend until I can actually play it!!
Now that it's up and running, at least I can carry on playing, but my god it was annoying.

On the flipside though, now I have my full Sonos up and running as well as my Phillips Hue TV lighting setup, the game is pretty epic!

I've recently purchased an original 2001 Xbox with around 25 games for nostalgia purposes.

I do have a PS5 and Xbox Series X but fancied playing games from my childhood on their original hardware.

It's so unbelievably refreshing and nice to put any of those 25 discs in and have the game just load up.
No updates, no patches, no installs.

You just put the disc in and play. Absolutely joyful compared to modern gaming.

Ok, the graphics are basic, the resolution is appalling but the games are just as fun as ever.

Clearly my year or so out of playing with my PS4 made me forget just how much updating etc is required with these modern consoles. I still can't quite believe it took all weekend to get up and running. What if I'd bought the game specifically to play with mates on Friday, and we just wouldn't have been able to!

It's not just updating either. My PS5 has 650GB of usable storage on its hard drive.
Call of Duty Black Ops Cold War is 230GB.

So not only do we have these massive updates and installs, you can only store a small number of games on the console at any one time and have to constantly re-install games you want to re-play.

I miss the simple days of playing COD MW2 on an Xbox 360 online before all the hackers took over.
