Live the Life You Love / Don't Sweat The Small Stuff
Discussion
Thoigh not year 100% confirmed, I'm quite sure my Dad had a stroke tonight. Having been with him in the hospital, it seemed quite significant and I imagine potentially life changing, though I obviously hope he recovers well.
This year, COVID permitting, he and my Mum were meant to go to the US and Indian on holiday.
The chances of that happening in 2022 seem remote. Who knows if he'll ever be able to travel again.
I'm so glad that I pushed them to do a month long trip to Australia in 2019, to see various friends, that they'd long talked about but never done. Unfortunately plans they had for 2020 and 2021 never took place.
My sister was having a long chat this morning with my Dad. My Dad was also this week making various other future plans. The liklihood is, he won't be doing any of it.
My point?
You never know when something unexpected might happen in your life that can drastically change it.
I was thinking about all the inconsequential stuff that can dominate your day.
All the stuff people do in their lives, that they do not enjoy.
This has caused me to take a moment and think about all the stuff that there is to waste your time on being annoyed/upset about in this world. And how, putting off stuff you really want to do, can lead to you never doing it.
Not much of a huge point to this post. More so, just able to share something I'm not ready to discuss with any friends or non-immediate family yet.
But hopefully, it makes a few people think, to:
- stop wasting precious time on stuff that they ultimately don't care about
- To get on and do that thing they would love to do but have been putting off.
Also, here's wishing my Dad, who is a gentleman and one of the kindest and warmest people you'd ever meet, all the very best.
Take care all

Wish your dad all the best.
What you say is true, of course, but there’s loads of reasons people do things ‘next year’ , normally just more pressing things to do today!
It’s early day for your dad, but if he has had a stroke, recovery is better nowadays than it’s ever been. Long road ahead for sure, but incredible how one can recover from what at first is being very poorly indeed. Holidays may be off the agenda in the short term, but he’ll have a lot of hard work ahead and it can be something he can look forward to and very much feel he’s earned when he is able.
Good luck to you all

Seconded. I hope early intervention and swift care lead to a good outcome for your dad. My thoughts are with you and your family today. Keep us posted.
There are two types of stroke, clots and bleeds. The former is the most common. Clot busting drugs and care can lead to good recovery. This represents around 85% of stroke cases.
My brother in law had the latter which was not good news being not only a bleed but a very serious and profound bleed as a complication post surgery. This event has motivated me to live for now and get things done that I want to. There is no time like the present as you know what's what, the future has all the unpredictability of the future.

Thanks TUS. I do hope your BiL is OK or on the road to recovery. There are two types of stroke, clots and bleeds. The former is the most common. Clot busting drugs and care can lead to good recovery. This represents around 85% of stroke cases.

It looks like my Dad had the clot type, but, they couldn't find a clot. He was on blood thinners. But they have ruled out a bleed.
Absolutely agree with you, there's no time like the present.
Like many people the travel restrictions limited their plans. I had really wanted to go on a certain trip they had planned just as it was so important to them both and would be a memory I would cherish.
It's a tricky balance. Sometimes I think I'll drop everything and go round the world, fly in a Spitfire, whatever, in case it's suddenly too late. But on the other hand the only reason I have those options is because I made sacrifices for the future in the past, when I could have been having more fun instead of saving and studying.
When do you say, 'this is the future I was thinking of in the past'?
When do you say, 'this is the future I was thinking of in the past'?

There's certainly experiences you can only have at a certain time in your life. When do you say, 'this is the future I was thinking of in the past'?
You will always have loved having that experience.
But, if you tried to do it at a later date, or, tried to re-live it, it just would not be enjoyable.
There's plenty of people who save up for retirement, thinking they'll do everything they've wanted to do when they are retired, then when they get there realise they cannot/do not want to do all those things and feel like they have missed out.
