In the Thames Valley area look up Ray Northway. He's west of Reading and will sort that out I'd imagine.

Any details on what specific trouble he's having with it?

M539 goes into quite a lot of detail WRT the K-Jetronic system in this video, and this video series generally

https://youtu.be/u0tyVQ1iXUg

It's a very complex system, I would say your neighbour is looking at a big bill if he's looking to get the work done by someone else!

It's a mess , afaik the car hasn't run for 10 years it was bought on eBay 2 years back with the fuel system disassembled and bodged , the bodges have been sorted but the car won't run if the key is released but will start . It wouldn't do that when he got it but he has little mechanical knowledge and won't really listen to advice . He wants to take it to a local garage to sort but I would guess most of the mechanics won't have even seen the cis system let alone tried to troubleshoot it

I worked on it years back when I owned my 2.8i so I know how it works and around £1k to convert to carbs seems money well spent to me

Or he could whack it on eBay and buy a mx5 for summer fun instead

My immediate thought would be an issue with fuel pump wiring causing it to cut out when not cranking?

I agree with you that any "normal" garage is going to be in unfamiliar territory, mine was owned by a supposed Porsche specialist, and even then they managed to bugger up a lot of stuff.

Probably won't help him if he's not very mechanically inclined in the first place, but Charles Probst's book on Bosch fuel injection is very good.

Tell him to join the Porsche 924 owners club
Plenty of people on there who know their way around these systems.

yep and Porsche, Volkswagen, Audi, BMW, Mercedes-Benz, Rolls-Royce, Bentley, Lotus, Ferrari, Peugeot, Nissan, Renault, Volvo, Saab, TVR and Ford , loads of people used it , i had my Capri tweaked by a guy in Bristol but since they stopped fitting it in 1994 there are few people that really understand it to a level to troubleshoot , its not a complicated system really

I also understand the o rings dont like ethanol so it could be a really really expensive job on a car worth around £2k

Converting to efi would be his best bet IMO, it's not too tricky or expensive these days with the likes of Speeduino. He needs to be happy tinkering with it though to get it to run nicely but the end result would be well worth it.

Duff fuel pump relay? Can you run a 12v feed directly to the pump?
