Decided I'm going sell my 265bhp 3.0si Z4 and buy a car for 2k to last me a year when I will then buy a decent car.

So, max budget 2k, ideally lower than this though, somthing that doesn't look like a complete shed, reliable and nippy(ish). Don't want to be spending £££ on repairs either.

Ideas?

So don't you think your 3.0Si is a decent car? I loved the two 3.0si Coupes I had!

I got an E90 330i three years ago as a daily with the 3 litre N52 engine for just under £3.5K, but for some reason they seem to be cheaper now.

A first generation Volvo S60 could fit the bill, the facelifted cars from 2004 still look smartly styled and I still see quite a few around. They were built very well.

I meant I plan to drive a cheap 2k car for a year then I will get a decent car (compared to the 2k car). The Z4 is more than a decent car it's fantastic, a z4m would be very tempting but for now I need a cheap car for a year or so

Thanks for the suggestions some really decent cars I'm quite surprised. The 1.8 or 2.2 civic type s seem pretty good if I can get one for 2k

Ok, so I'm focusing more on the "nippy" part than "reliable", but they shouldn't be too bad

Mazda MX-5 NB 1.8i - no recent mentions of rust on the MOT history. Take it on a long test drive at motorway speeds to make sure it doesn't overheat like my old one did. Put the headlights on immediately when you test drive to check the battery/alternator condition, listen out for squealing of the aux belt. When you get back from the test drive switch the car off, then try firing it up again, sometimes hot engines have trouble starting.

Mini Cooper S R53 - newer 2004 model a bit more reliable than the earliers ones, and a lot more reliable than the later 1.6 turbo ones

Another supercharged motor - Mercedes SLK 230K. The M111 engine in these is fairly reliable save for a few minor niggles and the MOT history looks blemish free, no mentions of rust, etc

I still think the Type S looks great. I once had a nearly new 1.8 GT but mine was a Friday car - almost all the toys had to repaired, even the CD player. I’d still recommend one as it drove quite well and fuel economy was very good, I was just unlucky.

You’ll need to compromise on something!

Go for a spec that no-one wants. You’ll get better value.

2litre Focus

New MOT and till be able to get quite a bit of your money back in year.

2litres in a Focus must go OK.

Looks like a very respectable motor.

The link to the Focus doesn't seem to be working but presumably it was a Mk1 ST170 or a Mk2 2.0 Zetec? I bought an ST170 a fortnight ago for £1,100 with full MoT, the intention being to tidy it up and keep it as an investment/summer car, but I can't stop driving it at the moment and my proper daily driver isn't getting used at all. Not ideal with the salty roads as I'm probably creating more welding work every time I take it out laugh

It certainly feels like it'll do a year of running with no problems, though there's obviously an element of luck at this sort of price range. Even if it throws up a failure or two it should still be fixable comfortably within your £2,000 budget.

To be honest though if you just want hassle free motoring and not you're not too focussed on performance, I'd probably avoid any 'hot' or 'warm' versions of cars as they are more likely to have been hammered and more likely to have been owned by people less scrupulous about maintenance and servcing.
