Discovery TD5 replacement - what to buy?
Discussion
We have a Discovery TD5 that realistically we need to replace, a car we enjoy but the ongoing cost and time at the garage of small maintenance items given I have limited time to complete myself and its ongoing deterioration means we need to shift it and replace.
My wife uses this vehicle too for her 60 mile round commute a couple of times a week, I use it for a 34 mile round commute on the other days, so the 'we' below is a combined list from both of us.
Things we like/need:
High driving position
4wd for snow on road (live on the edge of the Yorkshire moors), high ground clearance for drifts.
4wd for field towing (hay/horses/livestock hobby and small holding)
3.5 te towing capacity - plant trailers full of hay and horse boxes full of horse are heavy
Relatively good fuel consumption
Surprisingly comfy seats
Relaxed driving/crusing
It has never broken down and left us stranded
Things we'd like to improve on:
Less rusty/leaky/wearing out
Lighter clutch or auto for heavy traffic
Slightly quieter/faster motorway cruising for long trips to the Alps etc.
Functioning A/C
Make the dog less sick than the bouncy overhung rear
Thoughts started at a FFRR TDV8 4.4, but being from Yorkshire I'm tight and am now looking for something a little cheaper. Thoughts have progressed to a late Mk1 Touareg 3.0 tdi '08-'10 model, decent 4wd with lo ratio for fields etc, yet not too agricultural as we don't need live axles etc. for serious off roading, ok performance and comfort.
Ideally I don't want to spend more than £8k and would look to run for 4-6 years before replacement as we have done with the Discovery.
Any other ideas?

Yep, the tight budget has driven me away from 4.4 tdv8s.
With regards to MLs the wife doesn't like the look of them.
Land Cruisers - the budget seems to get quite old ones. Likely more reliable and better longevity than the Discovery but probably similar in refinement and speed.
Jeep GCs - something to look at vs the budget.

I’ve had a -20 series 3 litre D4D before, I’d say refinement wise they’re not bad considering they’re a 4 pot and a bit better than a TD5 but no where near as refined as a TDV8 or TDV6, less likely to break though!.With regards to MLs the wife doesn't like the look of them.

The Grand Cherokee makes a lot of sense with your budget in mind:

These come with the same drivetrain as the ML.

Out of interest was yours an auto or manual?
How was the average fuel consumption?
The Toyota?, it was a 55 reg 120 Series LC5 auto so it had the later 5 speed auto, MPG was 25-26 around town and probably 32 ish on a motorway run.How was the average fuel consumption?
I’ve also had a L322 Range Rover 3.6 TDV8 before and that was 22-23 around town and about 30 on the motorway, lovely engine though!.
Had a last of the line Discovery 2 Landmark for 11 years and loved it even though it did throw up a few big bills. If they still made the Td5 Discos I'd have another one.
Long and hard thoughts of a suitable replacement took place. A Discovery 4 would have been my ideal car but the potential for huge bank account emptying bills was just too much of a concern.
Eventually went for a 2014 Freelander 2 Sd4, 190hp auto. OK it won't tow 3.5 tons (well actually it will tow nearly 5 tons, just not legally) but the normal 2 ton limit is fine for our caravan towing purposes. Biggest drawback is the smaller boot than the D2 but I don't need all that space regularly. It hasn't the character of the D2 but I'm growing to love it just the same.

£8k will just about get you into second generation Touareg.
It'll be a V6 with no options and over 100000 miles but it's got the 8 speed box and is still fairly well equipped as standard. No reason to think it wouldn't have another 5 or 6 years of relatively trouble free motoring.
