I have read all the threads about servicing ZF 8 speed auto boxes and have decided to get it done on my F11 which is on 93000 miles. BMW quoted a very silly amount and my very good indie quoted over £600 + VAT. ( I hate the way the motor trade always quote without VAT, we all have to pay it.) The cheapest option I can find is to have a mega flush in Bristol for £420 + VAT.

I can buy a genuine service kit (OEM) for £249 delivered and have been told it takes about 1.5 hours worth of labour. Unfortunately my advanced years do not allow me to crawl around under cars anymore so I will have to find someone to do it for me.

Does anyone have any recommendations? I don't mind travelling a bit as long as it is a good price.

I also have an E46 2.5ci auto convertible which has never had the box touched but is only on 70000 miles so maybe a flush would do for that one at £320 + VAT.

Try Dartford Transmissions https://www.dartfordtransmissions.co.uk

I used them many years ago and was very happy with the result. They have a machine which can do a full fluid flush, as opposed to just dropping the pan and topping up.

Plus 1 for a full flush. Did this on my 18 year old, 55,000 mile E46 and it made a world of difference to the quality of the gear changes.

More locally it would be worth a chat with Bristol Transmissions.

The 8 speed ZF is incredibly reliable and they rarely fail - they have come a long way since the previous 6 speed. Loads of 520d taxis around with 250,000 miles on the original oil. Look on Ebay and you can buy a good secondhand box for 300 quid or so - there is little demand so they are pretty much worthless.

Draining the oil in the gearbox sump and refilling with new is about as far as you need to go with that. If the sump isn't leaking (they generally don't) I'd not touch it.

The E46 will be fine as it is. Again. I'd leave well alone. The box is good for 200k plus on the factory oil.
