So…my head has been tuned and it feels like new car time. Had many many BMW’s over the years, this would be our 3rd 5 Series. Usually get them at 3 or so years old so this puts us at early ish 2018. My questions….

Seems to be a lot moaning that mpg is not great on the 2.0d, worse than previous models. Is that still the case?

Idrive - connected drive seems to cost about £70 a year, worth it? Car play would be handy, looks like it costs £265? Are there any toys worth having? Be good to have full Spotify integration, search functions etc..screen.

Any problems I should be aware of? Have been stung with a broken chain before, really hope that does not rear its ugly head!

Cheers

I got my g30 18months ago and still enjoy driving it. Was a big improvement imo from the f10 I had before. Can’t say any downsides part from the little cubby hole underneath the light switch is flimsy. Other than that I can’t really fault it. Mpg wise I’ve not really took too much notice I just drive it and put fuel in it when needed. On the obc it’s showing about 34mpg which is 90% stop start and short journeys.

Is yours the standard 520d? My Merc currently gets 47mpg on the odd long journey and short school runs each day

I have a G31 520d, standard.

In 45000 miles, I have averaged 42mpg.

That’s predominantly free-flowing A road, motorway and long runs.

It’s not bad on fuel, but it isn’t great,

50mpg+ is absolutely achievable on a motorway run.

The rest of the car is good, but I can’t say I’d leap to buy another. It feels a bit too clever for its own good. Like something is about to break/fail.

Mine is fully loaded apart from gesture control and HUD, which I’m not bothered about.
Memory seats is good. Upgraded headlights is excellent. Panoramic roof is good.

I used to get 42 mpg round town all day long in my G30 2.0d 55mpg on a run. It was my third 5 and would still have it if my wife’s hip and knee was not so bad

The current generation definitely does a good job of having the premium feel and I've found when pressing on that it does a surprisingly good job of feeling smaller than it actually is.

I can't comment on the diesel economy from extensive personal experience (the N63 powerplant doesn't "do" economy) but from driving courtesy 520ds a couple of times in the last few years the newer ones with mild hybrid are much more economical. You should be safe from timing chain issues as it was more something that affected the N47 which isn't fitted in the G30.

I have a 540i X-Drive and it is a lovely thing. I usually get around 32mpg commuting 25 miles to work. On a longer journey back to UK it will do around 35mpg and I don't hang about. I also have an F10 AlpinaB5 and would have to say the build quality of the F10 is much better and feels more solid ( it is a fair bit heavier ).

I have pretty much all the options in mine and ones I couldn't do without are auxiliary heating and steering wheel heating ( it is much colder here in Germany! ). Comfort seats are also a must.

I have Apple carplay etc but never bothered with it. I just stream Amazon Prime music from my phone.

Mine is a 2017 with 38,000 miles and it has not been trouble free. I have had lots of issues with the steering ( steering box replaced, suspension mounts replaced etc ) making creaking noises. On Monday I have just had a door mirror replaced ( passenger side ) as it kept getting stuck when reversing. It would tilt down and then stick when you went to move forward again.

It is quiet and comfortable though and the cabin is a nice place to be.

I have a G30 520 D x drive.
Had it from new ...registered March 2017.
The OBC is showing an average 51mpg over 5000 miles since Sept. On a long steady run it will do about 55mpg.
Its had the EGR cooler replaced under warranty
Drivers seat swab replaced as the stitching was coming undone
Last Sept EGR valve and the automatic radiator flaps replaced under warranty.
Overall after 34000 miles and 5 years i love it and not looking to change

Superb cars. I did 70k in my G30 520d. Averaged 50 mpg over that period. Nothing other than scheduled servicing and the EGR recall. Original discs and pads and 1 set of tyres. Mix of decent A roads and motorway driving mainly.

The Connected car is very much worth it IMO. The live traffic on maps is very good. You also lose stuff like weather and the apps. I personally dislike seeing a screen without the info it is meant to have on it which is what happens when it lapses.

Whilst a 30d is nicer in many ways, a 20d is perfectly acceptable and isn't slow.

I think you mean comfort seats are a nice to have. They’re pretty few and far between in the UK.
I’ve been looking at Tourings but Christ they’re expensive even at 3 years old

I have a 530d XDrive, very comfortable, more than enough power, I prefer the 6 cylinder engine. Tech is great, some of it is gimmicky such as the display key or the gesture control for the audio / answering phone calls. Head Up Display is great, and the iDrive tech has certainly moved on from the F10 previous gen. I was in an F15 X5 before. I kind of miss the height a bit, was contemplating an X3 M40d but prices are crazy at the moment.

From my experience in an E60 with sports seats and reading on other threads about how bad the standard seats are I’d say they were essential. Perhaps an owner of a G30 with standard seats can comment?

How can they be essential when 90% of UK cars don’t have them?

I'm looking for a nice G31 at the mo. For those with the 530d, what sort of mpg are you seeing?

In Germany they are far more common. The question was what options do you regard as essential. Me personally having had both and finding the sports seats really uncomfortable on a long journey they are essential. When I searched for my car it was the first option I ticked. Personal opinion.

The EGR cooler was done under the recall

Last year i noticed some hesitancy / misfire at low speed, diagnosed as EGR valve, that and the radiator flaps replaced without quibble under the BMW extended warranty, total cost was ovdr £1000, i paid just the excess

How much are they charging for the extended warranty these days? One of the reasons I jumped to Mercedes’ was that they charged £700 for 2 years extended warranty!

I think mine was £550 with a £250 excess.

EGR cooler was a recall last year - check it’s been done as, apparently, there’s a fire risk if it isn’t. I’m on my third one now rolleyes
Symptoms for me were a drop in mpg and losing coolant.
