After years of reading all the great suggestions of cars, I am now in need of my own what car suggestions but it may be a bit boring.

Ill be doing between 12 to 15k a year with a mixture of A roads, B roads and Motorways so I think that is diesel range, this will easily be 50 mile plus each way at least 3/4 times a week.

I like estates and that is my preferred body type but I would have a large Hatchback or Saloon if I think the boot space could work.

Budget, £10k-15k ideally in the middle.

Mileage, ideally under 90k. However reliability is the big issue as Ill be using this for site visits so If i feel comfortable in a higher mileage car im open to suggestions.

Now the boring shortlist from myself. I am after a larger car but would quite happily look at mid sized estates.

I like the Mazda 6 Sport, estate maybe saloon at a push but I really like how the car looks and I think it is reliable enough.

Mondeo, Estate or Hatch

2017 plus Insignia VXR Line again in Estate or Hatch.

I currently drive a Volvo estate but the cost of replacing that with a newer model is out of my range.

Anything I have missed or any advice on the above models would be welcome? Thanks in advance.

If you can make a hatch work then the Mondeo Vignale would & is the car I daily:

Thank you for the suggestions so far Ill look into the DS5 as it seem like a hatch/Estate hybrid.

ZX10R the red Mazda 6 and the VX-Line are exactly what I am after and The Vignale I didn't realize was in my price range.

Have Mazda got the Sky Active engine reliable now? I remember years ago they had oil problems or something along that line.

Could consider an E220 CDI - can get ULEZ compliant for the budget, 2015-16; may be more comparable to the Volvo you're replacing

Late 2019 I bought a 2017 Mazda 6 Sport Nav estate that had 68k miles on the clock for £11.5k. Now on 78k (covid impacted mileage) and not given me any major problems.

Only niggly thing I've had is the power fold mirrors sometimes work, sometimes don't, sometimes go half way etc. so just turned them off. Probably some broken gear teeth somewhere.

The 2.2d comes in 150 and 180hp variations so try to find a 180 if possible. I got my 180 remapped the first month or so and its around 220hp now.

I read about the oil / fuel problems of previous years but it seems that was largely sorted by the 2017 face-lift. One tip I got was to watch the i-eloop screen and when the engine shows as 'not ready' it might be doing a dpf burn and try to listen for it and wait it out before switching off.

The face-lift ones started on 66 plates and gained heated steering wheel and the HUD is white text rather than blue, but other than that it's hard to spot the difference.

Thanks for the info thats really helpful.

I am still running numbers through my head. Both of the below examples work out around the same if broke down into monthly payments.

Buy used, I own the car but risk having no warranty and will have to foot the repair bills myself. Also potential to be without a car whilst its being repaired.

Lease or PCP, I have no worries about warranty, only service and maintenance but unless I pay the balloon at the end I don't own the car, it is nice and new though.

I have always bought used cars but this time I will be dependent on the car for work.

Any reason for not looking at vw pasat or golf estates?

Octavia also a decent shout, might get a similar car as the above for less money?

But at the end of your time with your car you also have something to sell & if you buy an approved used (something like this Insignia) you get a years Network Q cover which you can extend up until you reach 100k which gives you your peace of mind.

How would you rate the warranty offered by Network Q?

13k buys a nice golf or smart pasat I would always keep a bit in reserve for maintenance.

Jag xf 2.2d older but a few nice spec low milage models about

ZX offers lots of decent as usual! I would listen to his suggestions over mine tbh!

Thanks for all the suggestions.

I have decided rightly or wrongly.

I am going to buy new and suck up the 6 month wait time. Ill get my wife a Fiat 500 which she wants and that releases my Volvo to use for work in the interim.

I have spoken to a Kia dealer local to me and I am going to see about ordering a Proceed. I had a Ceed 3 estate as a hire car for a month so I know what they are about.

I have never bought a new car before so its new to me. Plus with it being a Kia and the 7 year warranty I will most likely pay the balloon payment and keep it until the Warranty expires.
