I need a few of these. I just want to buy them, fit them into some equipment we use (tiny data usage) and not have to worry about contacts.

Where should I look for these?

I tried but it seemed more complicated than I thought as offers all seemed to be contract type. Think I have sorted it now.

Pretty much any local convenience store or supermarket at till points will sell you a PAYG sim card for £1 then just top it up as needed.

Just get any PAYG sim that works well in your area.

Alternatively, I use a few low cost monthly Sims in my business in equipment to monitor fridge temperatures and payment terminals.

No need to keep topping up and hassle free.

Current cheapest is Lebara (1gb data). £3.95 / month (no contract)

It can be a bit of a nightmare. PAYG these days, doesn't really mean PAYG as loads of companies require a monthly top up.

Like you, I don't need it for a phone, I've just got a OBD car tracker so ordered a Giffgaff PAYG sim. It's fitted and works great, but I still really don't know whether I'm going to have to top it up monthly. If I do, no great issue, it's a good little tool and worth a tenner or so a month.

I've been checking it (only put it in this week) and it only seems to require about 2mb per day to track my car and send the alerts to my phone app.

Three offer a free SIM with 200MB of free data each month. Needs activation which can be a faff (plenty of help if you Google) but order it here: http://www.three.co.uk/datareward?manufacturer=&am...

I have a few, one in the car, one in an iPad, one in the second slot in my phone. Still seem to keep working if out of a device not being used for a couple of months.

FURTHER EDIT: it appears to cost £10 for the SIM now. Sorry for all the edits!

It does seem a gap in the market to get a data SIM that doesn't need a monthly contract / top-up that only Three have a solution for. And they are not cheap... (a bit cheaper on Amazon though)

How about 1p Mobile?

Works on the EE network. They have a £30 sim plan that's good for a year:
