I've found Muc Off degreaser to be canny.

Bilt Hamber Surfex HD is a great degreaser. It will shift anything although if really thick agitation with a toothbrush is a good idea. It’s water based so rinses clean.

Although I’ve not used it myself I’ve heard that the own brand screwfix degreaser is at least as good and cheaper.

I use both… I would say BH is better (I like a lot of their products)

But for bigger areas, I use the screw fix stuff. And for driveways, windows, cars etc… does most things fairly well.

Methylated spirit(not white) best and cheapest for cleaning/degreasing just about anything.

Another vote for WD40, it does the job and it's cheap, especially if you buy the 5L container.

That's what I use and I've tried lots of different stuff.

Cheap, smells nice, leaves an oily film which makes it easier to remove dirt etc the next time

Brake cleaner will work well but can stain your plastics to a chalky white

x ring chains. Do you even have to apply anything. Grit and dirt just sticks to the oily film you spray on.
Always though there should be some sort of big crakerjack pencil you could apply graphite with.

Yes they can still rust solid - I use gear oil - recommended by many and unlike grease doesn't hold much crap to it

Depends what / where you are cleaning as white spirit leaves an oily residue, meths doesn't (I use it on car interiors)

Amazing degreaser, better than anything else I've tried even from places like the factors etc. Probably not as effective per ml as white/meth spirit, but water soluble and more manageable.

chain - so oily residue a benefit

have a 5l can of degreaser also - not sure what it is - it's blue? But never use it as I have no idea what effect it'll have on o-rings (or paint)
