Asked pay final balance on a car the day before collection??

Sorry PH's I have a question about something that's bothering me!

I've bought many cars for myself over the last few decades. I always pay the deposit asked when signing the paperwork and when I go to collect the car I pay the final balance using my debit card.

When I paid my deposit last week i later received an email from the dealer with the details of the car Im buying and their bank details to transfer the balance the day before I collect. I said I have never had to do this before and they said their debit card machine will only accept a maximum of £1000.00.

Is this now normal practice? Is it questionable? Or am I overthinking this? The balance is only a couple of Thousand or so.

I would appreciate PH opinion as I'm supposed to do this tomorrow

I've bought a few cars recently. The last was a Ranger at £30,000+. I paid £500 deposit & the balance by debit card on the day.

Maybe some less organised dealers might have limits, but sounds a bit odd.

I was asked to do this last time too. I rang them and agreed to make the payment, via online transfer, on handover. The risk that way is delays should the payment not go through immediately. I wasn’t prepared to pay and not take immediate possession

I picked up a new car last week. Paid on collection with my debit card. They did say I would need to do it the day before if I wanted to do a bank transfer.

A bank transfer is harder to “claw back” and Is less fees for them.

Thanks for so many prompt replies. It is a main dealer. I just found it odd. But then it’s been a longtime since I bought a car…. Well 18 months lol! Feeling a little reassured now.
