Hi chaps,

I have received my MOT license and looking to open a garage.

I am hoping to receive some advice on following:

Do I need another license type to open a premise? from my research I gathered I might need to apply for

• Motor Vehicle Repair Business Licence (MVRB)

• MOT testing authorisation

What is involved in setting up MOT station ?

Most importantly what kind of premise allow for mechanic workshop? I am having hardtime finding the info. From what I gathered B8 is for storage where most properties are advertised under. Mechanic might need B1 or B2 but also can do under generic use term. I appreciate some advice on this.

And finally where to look? I have search rightmove and realla.co.uk plus movehut

Start with the council. Im sure they will tell you what you need to start a business.
Council Planning portal will be able to tell you what type of premises other local garages are operating their business from.

You will likely need B2 but, more importantly, to find a landlord that'll accept motor trade.

Other than MOTs, the motor trade isn't governed or regulated. You will need insurance though.

Finding suitable premises was the single most difficult thing when setting up my workshop. I ended up buying somewhere 50 miles from where I live.

I’d hazard a guess that, planning aside, the main issues would be that the vehicles take up a lot of space, generate lots of traffic, noisy work, and may introduce land contamination concerns…. all things that would be bad for a landlord as the could put off prospective tenants for other units?
