A previous owner has gone mad with what looks like white grease all over the hinges and body work around it. It’s a bit gritty now. What’s the best way to remove the majority of it?

Don’t want to bugger up the paint. I’ll take a pic shortly.

I'd treat that the same as any road dirt. If you have a water jet that would remove anything that isn't stuck on. If it's stuck on, use a road tar remover. Then you can clean as normal. You'll need to rewax and polish after cleaning.

Degreaser won't damage paint.

An excellent degreaser, but I was always warned against using it on any plastics or painted surfaces - have I been unduly cautious perhaps due to an old formulation that did eat paint?

A good all purpose cleaner like Bilt Hamber Surfex will sort that out.

I would say of all the spray used maybe 1 or 2% of the actual stuff is doing the job of its intent. Bloody stupid idea, it’s not an army tank dipping in and out of salt water its a Volvo estate!

It seems to be something Volvo dealers spray about more generously than other brands. A soft cloth then a soft brush with soap/ washing up liquid should do it.

I’m a BH Surfex fan for degreasing but for your situation I’d try methylated spirit on a soft cloth first.
