I'm sorting out my late Father's finances and have found a share certificate from 1999 for Centrica PLC shares. I'm trying to find out what they are worth, but their website doesn't allow me to put in the date they were purchased (only goes back to about 2007). Putting different dates in totally changes what their calculator says, so I'm confused as to their value. On their home page today it says 71.74p in the top corner, which I take is the current share price.

When I Googled 'Centrica Ordinary Shares' that comes up as 72.04 GBX which I initially thought was pounds, but I guess it's close enough to the above figure that it must be pence (just slightly different timings/update I guess). Shame as 540 shares at £70 each would be a nice lump sum, rather than about £380.

The question is: Does the age of these shares make any difference, or am I overthinking it?

A second question is: My Step Mother is named as a holder as well, so I take it half of these share once cashed in would go to her? She isn't named on the Will (it's 50/50 with my Sister and I )and for various complicated reasons received a larger split of the property value when it was sold and they both went into a Nursing home. A solicitor has LPOA for her, so I'd liase with them, but would be interested in any thoughts while we are waiting for Probate to be granted.

If it's £380 or so, split in half, then hardly worth worrying about, but if it's considerably more it might be another matter.

For further info: The original charge was £1,250 for those shares: I don't know why he particularly went for these shares as it doesn't look like they've been a great investment and he was usually more careful looking at his other finances.

Thanks for the replies. I'm still waiting for Probate to be sorted, so will contact when it is. I guess it's not a huge amount, so I'll focus on the other accounts, etc to make sure they are all in order.
