They've started to install full fibre broadband in our street. The barriers they are using are labelled Swish, but there was a branded van on the first day for Trooli.

Does anyone have any experience with either of these ISPs - if I sign up now it looks like I can get free installation.

Also - how do they actually get the full fibre to your house. Do they dig up your drive, or do they connect it somehow to the existing BT line (I assume not, because that would mean some copper in the mix). I also assume they can't blow it along the route used by gas, water or electric.

I'm actually pretty happy with my current FTTC from BT, but it does look like full fibre is cheaper for more bandwidth, so I might as well.

If it comes in overhead, they leave the old copper cable there and use it as support for the fibre. If it's underground they use the old duct, or if not suitable then mole a new one. You can have it come into your house wherever you like (within reason), doesn't have to be where the old master socket is.

Had OpenReach in last week to run FTTP. They changed the outside box and put the router inplace next to the normal phone socket but running the fibre in the ducting they hit a blockage. Just waiting on them to dig up part of my drive and next doors to clear the blockage

Oh, that's interesting to know. We have had Zzoomm digging the area up for weeks now, and I was put off by them potentially making a mess of replacing the drive and/or lawn, and by the fact that they've only put fibre along the opposite side of the road. Sounds as if that's just because all the telegraph poles are over there.

We've got Truespeed installing full fibre at the moment - promising 500MB internet instead of our current 50MB from the phone line - all for £10 more a month and they'll give me the first 6 months for free while my current contract comes to an end?! Feels too good to be true but we'll see

Is it definitely fibre to the house, or fibre to the cabinet and then use the existing cables for the short run to the house?

Fibre all the way from exchange into your house, terminated in a little fibre ONT (optical network terminal) about the size of an old master socket that presents you ethernet to plug your router into.

It's a bit bigger than the old master socket. Here's a photo of our ONT in the garage. The grey box is where the fibre terminates, the white box is the modem? and it's powered by the wall wart.

The old master socket is in the photo: that is now redundant as we went to digital voice shortly after installation.

Grey box is normally on the outside of the wall, then just the smaller white box (to the left of yours) inside.

We have had 2x Cityfibre installs now in 2 different houses. Both times when they were wiring the street they left a small black cover on the pavement.

On the day they run it to the house, both times under the grass, literally just stuck a spade in to create a line, pushed them cable in the hole then pushed the grass back down.

on the 500 connection now and its great, 500 down and up.

I'll be interested how you get on with Trooli, if you go for it. It has rolled out here as well but I'm skeptical it's a government backed scheme and presumably the contract goes out to the lowest bidder in each area. Lots of complaints on their Facebook page of slow installs, poor customer service, frequent downtime etc. But, if I can get a decent 300Mb service for the same price I'm paying for 80Mb, then I would consider it.

In Cambridge with a cityfibre street and Vodafone 200/200 installed.

The Vodafone installer ran the cable through the garden border and to the front of the house. Not the best job but it’ll do.

I now have the fibre terminating in the comms cabinet in the utility room and the performance has been pretty good.

Regularly see 200+ up and down. Just now I got 217 down, 218 up on an iPhone connected over wifi (ubiquity).

Pay 28ppm for this which is less than we were paying for the old rubbish copper based service smile
