An individual owes me £700 but has been giving me the runaround for the past week with offering various excuses as to why he has not refunded my money. For clarity this is a failed transaction between two private (not businesses) individuals. I do have our conversations of the transaction snapped giving an ‘audit trail’.Latest excuse is that he entered the wrong account number into the BACs system and is asking his bank to resend the money. I know it’s not quite that simple, if indeed it is a true story. Based upon his latest story I am considering legal action to recover my money, or is there an alternative other than sitting back doing nothing.
Advise appreciated.

A week is rather a short time to consider going legal. I would make sure you've exhausted other options first. If he hasn't got £700 perhaps he could do installments. Does he agree that he owes the money? There will be a reason why he hasn't paid, you just have to figure it out.

Yes he has £700, it’s my £700 which he confirmed receipt of when I sent it.
I do have a record of daily conversations regarding the return of my money following his withdrawal from our agreed deal.
I am getting an excuse a day for lack of his repaying my money, it’s a two hour electronic transfer.
I agree a week is a short time to be considering legal action which is why I am seeking advise to any other options that may be available to me.

Thanks for reply.

Personally I like to give people a bit more rope with which to hang themselves, but if the excuses are different every time then you could write him a letter reiterating the facts and saying that if payment is not received within 14 days you'll be seeking to recover the money in court. He'll either take you seriously, or go into bunker mode and ignore you. If he defends the claim there will be a court hearing and you'll need to be there. So if you threaten, be prepared to follow through.

Hopefully you can get payment sorted out amicably before that.

Thank you, yes I think following your comments I will give it a little longer, perhaps another week. I am really keen to avoid the legal process if possible. Thanks again.
