Woe is me, my 40 gig ipod has died. And my 40gig laptop only has part of my music collection on it

I know I should have backed my music up but 40gig ipod does not fit on 40gig laptop...
And if that wasn't enough Apple have discontinued the 40 gig... and the place I took it back to only have 20 gig ipod photos!!!

At least they didn't quibble and were sympathetic - so I am now the proud owner of a 20 gig ipod photo, a 120 gig external hard drive (bolt, gate horse etc.) and a crispy ten pound note (to drown my sorrows with). Oh well I guess the weekend will now be spent re-ripping my cds whilst surfing Pistonheads. Not much of a post really just wanted to remind everyone that you need to back up, because unfortunately everything is as reliable as a volkswagon.

Life's a bitch! Then it wipes out your music collection. I think you might need more than a tenner

This is actually quite poignant to me. I am just about to send back my 40gb ipod because it keeps freezing on me. Did they offer just a 20gb photo to you or did they offer the same 40gb but a refurbished. The terms and conditions for warranty replacements scare me a bit. "functionally the same" sounds like they will send me a scratched to buggery ipod if they can.

If it's under 12 months old and you send it back to Apple they tend to send you a brand-new iPod. No scratches.

They offered the money back straight away when they couldn't replace the unit (they didn't even bother asking about a refurbishment). I didn't want to mess around looking for a new ipod elsewhere so went for the 20gig + USB hard drive option (I had been intent on picking up an external drive anyway). So I am now attempting to rip everything remotely music based onto my new drive... Long weekend but I would have been vegging out to the Grand Prix anyway.
