Hi folks... my 1976 2.7 911 just let me down in the supermarket car park, the car will be recovered home but just wanted to ask if any air cooled experts had an idea of what might be the cause of the issue:

I drove from home to the supermarket via 3 other stops, the car started fine again instantly each time until I was leaving the supermarket - It starts fine but then immediately cuts out after the initial start up revs, can't hold any revs at all and dies. It has never had this issue before, i'm thinking it might be something fuel based? Any ideas folks?

Does that age of 911 have a DME relay? Common possible failure on the later air-cooled.

Totally different car but suspect the principle might be the same, my 1996 Merc S124 300 diesel was running poorly, the tacho was conking out and it was throwing up ABS warning lights. A kind PHer suggested changing the OVR or over voltage relay which sits up in the bulkhead behind the battery and which looks exactly like the DME relay referred to in the earlier post. I changed it and everything was instantly cured. They simply wear out over time I gather. About £60-£70 for the Merc.

I think it might be too old to have a DME ... think they may be SC onwards... I'll double check that though

I couldn't find reference to it on the interweb for a '76, so I am probably wrong.

It could simply be the fuel pump - have you noticed it getting noisy?

Presumably it's CIS? Or carbs?

It is CIS. RAC have diagnosed dodgy fuel pump... Will have to get it to my specialist and see what they think.
