Citroen C2 Starter motor removal guide
Discussion
Just replaced starter motor on an 05 Citroen C2 VTS 1.6 so I thought I'd share my insight.
This guide should cover all petrol C2 models to about 2009.
The biggest issue with this job is getting easy access to the starter as it's behind the engine, with many many wiring bunches getting in the way. Don't bother trying to get at it from below unless you fancy removing the exhaust manifold.
First remove the airbox(as one, don't split it first) disconnect battery. Now there is a nice aperture to the back of the engine, use a mirror to locate where the starter motor is. Take the OSF wheel off, there's a nice hole where you can clearly see the starter motor, the 3 electrical connections and the bottom bolt which is a right pain to get off from above.
Then you start the job of unclipping about 6 connectors and moving bundles of wires out the way. (some still remain in the way) There is a metal plate held on by 2x torx screws to undo, and a solid section of coolant hose which is the bane of this job. There are 2x 10mm bolts to free this, one is difficult to access just above the starter. It's still in the way but freeing the solid hose does make life easier.
Access to the main positive connector is relatively easy 13mm I think. Negative is just below that, I found I could put my arm around the LH side of the engine as if I was hugging it to undo the electrical connections. There's another smaller wire to undo too. You can just about see through a gap in the manifold if you're struggling, or use a mirror on a stick.
Now all that's left is the 3 bolts holding it on, The bottom and top ones go Left to right and the other is below that pesky solid coolant pipe and other wires on the RH side of the engine(at the bottom just on top of the gearbox) That one goes right to left. I undid the bottom bolt by feeling it and the hugging engine technique but it's probably easier to get some extensions through the hole behind the front wheel to undo that one. Top bolt is fairly easy to undo.
Starter comes up through the hole where the airbox was.
It took me about 3 hours to remove it(because I was working it out as I went along) but only about an hour to fit the new one.
