Don Wilson RIP
Discussion
Don Wilson passed away aged 88 on the 22nd. He was a founder member of the Ventures, the most successful instrumental band of all time, who sold over 100 million records. Don Wilson met Bob Bogle in 1958, when Bogle dropped in to a secondhand car dealer owned by Don Wilson's dad. The band was formed the following year (Don's mum came up with the name) and recruited Nokie Edwards.
The Ventures pioneered the use of many effects that later musicians came to take for granted, such as fuzztone, reverse tracking and the use of the 12 string guitar. Their album The Ventures In Space was a major influence on the psychedelic bands of the late 60s; Keith Moon said it was his favourite ever album.
The Ventures are still in existence, but with none of the original members remaining, as they are no longer with us. The current drummer is the son of one of the previous drummers.
