Where do people most enjoy going (mainland UK) for a short break to get away from things?
I used to go to Fairy Glen, Betws-y-Coed, Wales once a year. Quite good for mountain biking and hiking in the summer & skiing/snowboarding in the winter.
Haven't been for a while now, but also want to try other places I may not have been to.

St Ives, Cornwall......pint of cold lager at either the Sloop or Lifeboat on the harbour front...take the train from St Erth to St Ives, it's a branch line that runs along the side of the beaches. Absolutely breath taking.
First went there in the late 60's....so impressed, I moved to Cornwall lol

Depsite Steviebabes - love the Lake District - every bit of it! 
But I also enjoy walking, driving und cycling in Yorkshire Dales, Lancashire Hills. Und ist brilliant scenery in Scotland , Northern Ireland und the Isle of Mann.
Und ist also North Yorkshire Moors - und Bronte country.
Und that programme which Dimbleby made - was just super. (Enjoying that thing on COAST too - but think they should concentrate more on C. O. A. S. T. as it applies to watching tide when rock pooling
Also enjoy Cornwall und Devon.
Eastern England = Cambridgeshire, Kent, Sussex - also very pleasant.
Wales - Pembrokeshire Coast und North Wales - Snowdonia.
Ist spoiled for choice - UK ist a lovely country - but I think home ist where heart ist - und I recommend where I settle in Lake District!
Und my fave place in Europe? Again spoiled for choice but still think my home village of Wildhaus, Appenzell ist bees knees

Beat me to it.
Especially nice in March, when it is quiet.
Only problem with the train journey is that they are using newer Class 153's on the branch (probably 150's in the summer) and it was like an oven inside. They have tinted windows which you can only open at the top and it is an arse to take photos out of. You get reflections and everything.
Used to like the old slam door Metcamm 101's and 121/122's that they used to use. You could hang out of the window of those 
Still a nice journey though. Hope to go back there In September
Got to say GetCarter is very close with Torridon - a fabulous place, as is Knoidart (sp) - only accessable by boat, helicoptor or a 25 mile hike and they don't pay road tax there either!
My favourite though has to be Kenmore in Perthshire - anyone who has been there knows just what I mean

Ive always enjoyed the New Forest,they have some lovely little villages and towns like Cadnam,Brokenhurst,Beaulieu,lymington,Lyndhurst etc,and i think ime right in saying that the 1st Navy ships were built at Bucklers Hard using the Oak Timbers from the New forest,i would love to spend a week cycling around this lovely part of England.

From there you are within a close distance of Christchurch to take in the coast to Boscombe,Bournmouth,Sandbanks and Poole.
One of my favourite getaways for time on my own to think and relax is the River Itchen,you can more or less walk or cycle from Winchester to Southampton without hardly any interference from the outside world,surronded by country side and animals it has got to be one of the most relaxing feelings ever with the flow of water by your side.

John Lees of Barclay James Harvest wrote a song a few years ago about Knoydart..........
Knoydart is a peninsula on the west coast of the Scottish highlands, and most of the lyrical references are to places on that peninsula. The first line of the lyrics should read "heading for Mallaig", a town from which the ferry crosses the Sound Of Sleat (the correct spelling) to Knoydart. Spanish John, Ladhar Bheinn, Kinloch Hourn and Inverie are all places on the peninsula. The "ugly bastards", to whom this song is dedicated, are a group of John's friends with whom he visited the place in question.
