Strange MOT data

I've looked up the MOT history of a bike which is advertised for sale, and it seems a bit odd.

The bike is on an 1988 'F' plate, but the DVLA site says it was registered on 28th February 1992 (the bike model and colour match).

Also, it says the vehicle hasn't had it's first MOT!

The advertisement implies it doesn't have a current MOT. I suppose it could have covered its 40,000 miles within the first three years of its life, and not been MOT'd since, but it seems unlikely!

Should it set alarm bells ringing?

Sounds dodgy to me, probably an import if it's an 88 registered in 92, but beyond that it sounds like a weird situation.

Is it special or run of the mill.

My Corvette which was imported last year says first registered in 1969 as they’ve taken that date off it’s US title and it’s not had its first MOT.

See if it is an import and when.

If an import it will/should say on V5 or even the Gov.uk 'tax check' under; Date of first registration and Date of first registration in the UK.

At least my Guzzi does - I imported it in 2015 but it's a 'V' (suffix) plate as it was given an age related plate.

Also shows as '0' former keepers because that is only relating to UK keepers and it's only had 5 MOTs as it is now exempt (40+ yrs old) and that can be viewed on the Gov.uk 'MOT check'.

I hadn't thought about an import.

However, the Tax checker doesn't mention a date of import etc.

It's marked as SORN, with the last logbook issued on 4th August 2021.

Under MOT Status it says "No details held by DVLA".

Not having had it's first MOT only means it didn't have one when the system was computerised and hasn't had one since. The 1992 registration can be because the plate was fitted at that point or because it was imported then.

Phone and ask about it - then report back, it eliminates much of the guesswork

Think DVLA online MOT records only started in around 2005. So If it's been off the road since then, they would have no records online
