e-sim for US travel
Discussion
first thing I'd do is check your mobile company doesnt have a plan that offers free US roaming, sometimes for the same price (if you're out of contract) or a £1 or so more you can change. I'm with EE and its included and great.
Secondly, if you wanted you could have your current provider move you to an esim, and that would free up your physical slot for physical sims when you're travelling.
Finally, and what you were asking about, you can use a company like https://www.airalo.com/ and get an esim loaded onto your phone.
(I havent used the above one, but have heard good things)
edit: when using 2 sims make sure you go into settings and set which one to use as your default data and call number and remember to switch off data switching. In fact switch off data roaming on your primary uk number.

Free e-sim from T-Mobile, I've heard it works quite well.
