Pedestrian zone signage

DISCLAIMER… I am mostly just venting, we haven’t received a fine yet but I fully expect to. Yes, we were WRONG!

Went to Exeter today for a little outing. 5 quid voucher at John Lewis cafe, we know how to live. Anyhoo, the driver was intent on parking in the JL car park, and in hindsight we should have just parked when we saw spaces earlier, however as I was navigating him…



Don’t go left… car park is on the right! Round the corner to…



Aaaargh! At this point a bus was alongside us and so turning round was not an option. Now, I accept that we ‘should’ have seen the blue sign, but driving through an unfamiliar city with all sorts of stupid signage everywhere it didn’t spring to mind. I was focused on the no left turn and had no idea right was also haram.

Would this hold up for a PCN? I appreciate there are operating hours for the pedestrian zone, but surely they should sign it no right turn first?

You will be fine, its not enforced with any cameras as far as im aware
People regularly drive up the main high street behind buses and if police spot them they get a telling off thats all

Thanks, that’s reassuring. I didn’t see any obvious cameras. I’m not sure if it’s my imagination but Exeter is becoming more and more of a maze!

You should have turned right at the second set of lights, but I’ve seen lots of people do as you’ve done and not heard of people getting done for it, so hopefully you’ll be ok. You could always point out you’re a stranger to the city and got lost.
You’re correct about Exeter becoming a maze, thanks to the active travel scheme in Queen St, one of the main routes north now involves going over a narrow single carriageway bridge.

Yeah the iron bridge must claim a healthy toll of alloy wheels its so narrow

Tbf that does look confusing with the no left turn at the lights and the turn right arrow on the road. There's a poorly signed bus lane in Brighton that makes the council an absolute mint in fines.

Well you can’t necessarily, but it’s as clear as mud and the blue sign isn’t a standard way of announcing such things…
