It seems that Rishi Sunak's definition of a rebate is to give us £200 and then take it back over 5 years. I would define this as a loan but usually, someone gets to make the decision whether or not they take out a loan. So Sunak is loading us with a debt many of us will not want. Granted, it's only a small amount, but I find this to be disgusting, underhanded sleight of hand that demonstrates the short term thinking that has landed us in this st show. It also demonstrates what a greasy little snake oil salesman Rishi Sunak is.

It is disgusting. There will be many that get to repay it without having the benefit of receiving it!

You seem surprised.

Give the bloke a chance. He needs to get votes for his challenge for the leadership.

Can't you just overpay right at the start, send the power company an extra £200 so you will be square?

We have p***ed 400 Billion down the drain on the Covid scam, you really think they can afford to give anything way? Nope, for the next 30 plus years Govts will be all about taking from us.

Technically, we are not getting the money, the electricity suppliers are.

Then all electricity bills for the next 5 years will have a £40 excess. So if you are not paying for electricity this coming year, but will in the near future, you'll be paying out for something you didn't get.

Poorly thought out knee-jerk response to crisis

£200? I'm more concerned about the £billions that funded many people's 12-18 month long holiday on what was effectively full pay. I'll be paying that back for the next 20 years.

This has to be up there with the most ridiculous government ideas.
It just doesn't make sense, and won't make the slightest difference.

I've been reading about people moaning they won't get it as they don't pay council tax, I assume these people won't be charged an extra £40 a year?

The Council Tax rebate is totally separate. As I understand it everyone in England and Wales who pays Council Tax (Band A to D) will receive a rebate of £150 on their bill. This does not have to be repaid.

The £200 will be credited to everyone's electricity bill in October 2022 and need to be repaid at £40 per year for 5 years from April 2023.

Yeah. Two different things. £200 rebate on fuel bills to be paid back over 5 years, and a separate £150 council tax rebate for properties in the A-D bands.

I might be missing something obvious, but short of dying or emigrating won't we all continue to use / pay for utilities?

That is how I understand it, if you move out of your parents house to your own place you will be paying the £200 back even though you never recieved it directly

If we don't notice there's no point (for a politician).

My son might conceivably end up in that position, but given he's currently receiving free 'leccy and heat (courtesy of us) my heart wouldn't bleed for him.
