Job offer advice
Discussion
Hi all,
I am at a bit of a loose end with a job offer at the moment. Not 100% happy where I am currently employed so put a cv out there to an agency to see what came back.
Now I know the the wage I am on is definitely not ph worthy but I am trying to work my way up the ladder to see where I can get to, would of liked to of been there by now but it's taking longer to one company going bust and one making me redundant as they were selling up.
Currently I am on a salary of 26k, plus bonuses last year it took me up to around 31k Mark. I have been offered a role doing a similar job but in a smaller company who are trying to grow.
The new role is paying 30k, but being a salary is not dependent on bonuses. Existing role os working 9 -5:30, new role 7-4 and a shorter day Friday. Both in similar locations.
So do I stay where I am and hope bonuses come in to bump up my wage or do I move and get what would be slightly lower but guaranteed.
Thanks all.

As said. Ignore the bonus or at least heavily weight it on what is likely. If £31k is from a belter year and the other is £30k then go the £30k. Especially if your bonus could have any link to people's spending which may change in the coming months etc.
Also try to think two steps ahead. Does the new role give you new opportunities to learn or does it step you towards where you want to go.
Also what's that extra time you work worth to you. Could you get a side hustle, would you just be happier with more time not working. Could using that time to develop, through courses or going to h extra yard etc.
Which role is most likely to get you to where you want to be in five years.
Leaving a place isn't always easy but it's often good to leave before you are desperate to get out. Also consider what things made you start looking. Is your fear of change now making them feel less important.

Thanks all, I'm trying to tell myself the bonus is not a dead cert.
The day is a bit longer but there is an early finish, around lunchtime on Fridays so although four days are longer the fifth is shorter. 20 minute commute tje same as what I am doing now.
The new company I feel would have more chance to prove myself. Although as its smaller it may be harder but nice to know you have helped a company grow.
If they could go to 31k I would definitely move so I think that says ot all, it's just on a smaller wage with a mortgage and 2 boys under 3 that extra 1k would go a logway (if ot came through on a bonus)

Do you realistically see yourself progressing in your current company (promotion, pay rise etc) in the next couple of years?
If not, easy for me to say of course, it sounds like a good opportunity to move onto something else and get some new experiences. The earlier start may take a little getting used to but having done them myself it does make for a bit more of a peaceful commute and I'm sure the journey home Friday lunch time starting your weekend early will make up for it.

It’s not a smaller wage, it’s a larger wage - guaranteed (just without any bonus potential)I know what I’d rather have. A bird in the hand is worth two in the bush.
