I have a 2010 958 Cayenne 3.0 D, has done 65k miles and thinking of pre-emptive gearbox service ahead of any issues. Been quoted £950 by Porsche Indy, couple of other local indies not able to quote. Anyone had experience (Essex based) or any advice on if worth it and expected cost? Thanks in advance

Do you know what is included in this service apart from fluid change? I was planning to get a fluid change for gearbox along with transfer case and diffs for 2011 Turbo.
BTW, according to threads on rennlist I understand the Porsche branded fluid isn't required, the exact same can be purchased unbranded - Ravenol IIRC. So, .. I wasn't expecting it to cost this much.
BTW, I have used an Indy in Essex who I was very happy with. Did major service. I didn't ask for a quote on the gearbox fluid change though.

Tried to get a precautionary transfer box oil change by my local guy. He struggled to get reliable info on oiled spec and his service computer thing although almost new and enabling him to set up stuff on all Audi and VW cars had limited connectivity to Porsche! Not sure why Computors was even needed but it seems manufactures are making it difficult for indies to easily continue servicing.

Well worth doing. I've done my 2013 Cayenne V8 diesel four times now.

It's an Aisin transmission, with a synthetic fluid. OPCs want £38.00 + Vat a litre, you can get the original Aisin fluid online, or the VW branded (same) fluid for £27 per litre or so from TPS.

Same with the filter and sump gasket, all Aisin parts branded as VW rather than Porsche.

Each time I've done mine, the fluid has been dirty, and bits of metallic friction material on the magnets in the sump.

Look at the New Cayenne Diesel thread just below, scroll back a couple of pages and see my photos.

Cost of the bits is about £300.

Your quoted price sounds a bit steep, if they just drain/refill. In Germany they regularly service these, with a circulation pump that fits on the trans cooler fittings of the box, and pumps out all of the fluid, including the stuff in the torque converter, that you won't get out just by a drain/refill. I'd pay more for a service like that here, but I've never seen such a machine in the UK.

The difficulty is that no many people ask for such a service here, and the garages build in a cost factor I think.

ETA; It's a TR80SD Aisin transmission;

Fluid and stuff in the link.

Thanks! That is what I was expecting. On the Turbo, the standard service interval for the gearbox and diffs is 16Y / 160k Miles, which seems crazy. Mine is on 75k, planning to get it done this year. Consensus is certainly to get the transfer case done frequently.

Why did you change it 4 times already though?

Whilst it's supposed to be sealed for life (or 160K) it really isn't. I had transmission problems on the first ever new car I bought, a BMW 323i E46 in 1999, with a sealed for life 'box. Same with a 2002 Range Rover L322. I'd leant by then and changed fluid on my 2010 RS6 every 40K miles as advised by Unit 20. I kept that up ever since. See pictures of how dirty the fluid is. These 'boxes have Aisin synthetic ATF, same benefits I guess as synthetic engine oil. The difference I see is the friction material left in the fluid after many miles. For a negligible/reasonable cost, and doing lots of miles, and as my Cayenne V8 diesel is a keeper for the foreseeable, this preventative maintenance makes sense to me.

Writing this having just come back from UAE, where the taxis all have 600-700K KMs on them, with doubtless minimal maintenance and little mechanical sympathy, and all appear to be running OK, if not just a bit smelly.

It's worth trying a gearbox specialist rather than a Porsche Indie. A decent gearbox specialist will know a lot more about gearboxes than any Porsche Indie. I recently had my 981 PDK gearbox repaired here where as no Porsche shop was even willing to even look at the car.
