holiday reading material

have you read anything by dan brown? if not then i would recommend the da vinci code and angels and demons. they are both very good holiday books and especially good for planes as they are very difficult ot put down (i read each of them in 2 days)
um....
the human stain by philip roth is also very good. some people find it hard to get into but i enjoyed it.

You got it. Great book, but so is Excession. Just thought it best to read em in sequence.
the Vesuvias club by mark gatiss is quite a good light hearted read, agree on ian M Banks stuff, just done Algabriest but it its not really easy holiday/plane stuff. The rule of four was ok, bit factually dodgy.
Wilt books are a good travel laugh as well as long as you don't get embarrassed easy (LOL problems).

I've read that. Al Capone, and all that stuff. Was ok for the first 2 parts, but the third just dragged on, really badly.

Agree with you there. Not exactly what I would call a light read though. It's the only novel I know of that had a proper cipher written for it, complete with PERL script!
Snow Crash or Diamond Age are probably an easier introduction to his work.

read both of those last year quite good, tempted to get his other book but heard its not as good as the others

The Secret History by Donna Tartt is a superb read.
If you're into Sci Fi then the Otherland series by Tad Williams is a good one but if you plan to take all four books with you then you'll end up with an excess baggage charge.
If music is your bag then The Last Party by John Harris is an excellent and funny narrative of the Britpop era and how Blair used it to gain popularity.
