Are there any simple, easy FPS for someone with rubbish reflexes? I used to enjoy Medal of Honour, Duke Nuke'Em and Wolfenstein 15-20 years ago but even then needed to stick to beginners level. My adult sons have tried me out with more modern games like Doom, Halo and Call of Duty but even at the baby level I die in minutes. The last game I was able to actually enjoy was the modern Wolfenstein around 5 years ago.

Just bought a new Xbox X. Is there any games I could buy that would suit me? Thanks.

Maybe try something like Fallout 4, where you have FPS elements and controls, but there's more story/exploration than just run and gun?

All the Gears of War games are on game pass; I’ve just replayed all of them for the first time in years and they are great fun. Just put them on the easiest setting and enjoy yourself.

Xbox Series X is backwards compatibe with most stuff. Should be able to get some decent Xbox 360 & Xbox one games for next to nothing that would fit the bill. My old man was able to get through these:

- Bioshock
- Prey (2006)
- Crysis
- Half Life 2

Of the modern stuff, I have no idea. Most of it has a big online emphasis which doesn't interest me. I did play Doom 2016 and Doom Eternal though, the latter of which was brutally hard yet absolutely awesome.

I'd echo the above post though, the Gears of War games are good fun.

When I just can't be arsed, I grab a machine gun, camp in a suitable position and wait.

It helps if you're on a map with a decent amount of players eg over 15 on each side and a map that isn't too big. I've just (ie 5 minutes ago) finished playing BF3's Operation Metro map. You do move forward with the better players or retreat when the enemy move forward but you find a suitable point, let them bunny hop around shooting each other and you either end up assisting the kill or taking the kill. Some people will call you a camper. So fking what?

I do a combination of attack and camp depending on what is necessary. Sometimes camping can really help a team. It's called strategy.

There's a possibility your reflexes aren't to blame, but that the control scheme hasn't totally meshed with you yet. I know when I was much younger I really struggled with having two sticks, one for movement and one for aiming. It's not so much an age thing as an unfamiliar form of control in that sense.

I was going to suggest something like Call of Duty would be ideal for you, incidentally. The movement is (for the most part) similar across the entire franchise meaning there are a lot of stories for you to play through should you enjoy the franchise. The other added benefit is that health regenerates in it, meaning that you can take things slowly as you need.

For campaigns in games, reflexes generally shouldn't be the killer. The range of difficulties should work to everyone's benefit, so I wouldn't rule them out. Online multiplayer is very different though when you're fighting off 13-year-olds with three tins of Monster running through their veins!

If you enjoyed the most recent Wolfenstein games, have you played all of them? There are three: The New Order, The Old Blood, and The New Colossus. There's also Youngblood but we don't talk about it as it is tripe. The New Colossus is on the Xbox Game Pass service, which is a subscription service that gives you access to several hundred games.

I'd also like to suggest the Far Cry games, which are open-world but first-person. A lot of the game's mechanics are geared around stealth, meaning you could feasibly play through things slowly and tactically. When it goes right it really is satisfying. When it doesn't, you'll find me pitching grenades and emptying an AK47 at point blank. Like the Call of Duty games there's a sort of regenerating health mechanic which can lower the difficulty curve a little.

If I can help further or have any other ideas I'll drop them in here. Where possible I'd like to share enjoyable games with people no matter what age they are. Incidentally, the aforementioned Game Pass service is one of the best deals in gaming right now. A month or two subscribed to it and you'll be able to play a wealth of games without ever having to leave your house.

Same here. I was a whizz at Soldier of Fortune, but I can't get on with modern games - too many controls, graphics too slick so baddies hide, and my eyes have slowed down so I can't see which way they run. However in Battlefield 4 on PS4, I found that choice of weapon is critical. I always tried to use the heavy machine gun with 100 rounds so i didnt waste time reloading (cos most shots go skyward!). But long distance sniper shots with a sniper rifle make it easier. Then in close combat indoors, the shotgun is ace. Try that maybe while you get better at it? Then start playing with the grenades/rockets...?

This is PC based, hope they are available for Xbox but I don't follow what's released where.

Single player - I found the Borderlands series quite simple to pick up and play, it's not too fast, there are lots of weak baddies so it's not like one wrong move and you die, it's loads of fun and the cartoony graphics style make the enemies stand out quite well. Plus you can choose a character that is happy to walk up to things and shoot them with a shotgun so you don't have to worry about all the aiming nonsense

This is Borderlands 3, but the gameplay is similar on 2, TPS and 3. Borderlands 1 is showing its age

Multiplayer - Star Wars Battlefront II is quite 'spammy' with most of the guns having fairly low accuracy so everyone is in the same boat of long range being luck more than judgement and close in fights you just unload and hope for the best. Good players will rise to the top as they've got loads of practice, but the majority of players are running around going pew-pew-pew enjoying themselves.

Could try the Quake remaster on Game Pass, the controls consist of move, look, jump, shoot and change weapon, and it's still a joy to play. Same with Doom 64, it got overlooked in the day but finally getting the credit it deserves.

Edit - if we're recommending 3rd person, the Mass Effect Trilogy. Still looks and plays great, full of memorable characters and lots of story and lore building to go with the shooting. Ok the ending of 3 does go completely off the rails, but the 150 hours leading up to that point are worth it.

I would look at 3rd person shooters as they can sometimes be a little less hectic with good cover mechanisms etc

Gears of War as mentioned
Ghost Recon : Wildlands (Breakpoint is the successor its not as bad as people make out but its been patched a lot since launch)
Just Cause

Barring Gears these are more open world sandbox type games, so its not all hectic FPS levels

Get yourself over to the escape from tarkov thread.

Hugely difficult game but it’s all about thought and tactics rather than reflexes. They make changes to slow the game play down and overall progress so that the player base is fairly even.

Edit* didn’t realise it was Xbox! Battlefield while in a crappy state is decent for a few games, dying light 2 is out but isn’t much of an fps

I would look up how to get gamepass cheaply, and see what takes your fancy.

Zombie Army 4 I thought was good fun.

There are a few new Wolfenstein games. I'm fast approaching 50 and have just finished Wolfenstein Old Blood, bit of swearing and moaning about the game cheating though!!

I stay away from anything online against other humans as I get smashed. I find the Halo solo campaigns just about perfect, online multi-player is another thing altogether!!

FWIW I'm 49 and have a KDR on BF3 typically over 2. Yesterday, it was 15 but that's an exception. You just have to play more strategically and don't take risks that put you in the line of fire unless you have medics to pick you up. Learn the map, perhaps run around on an empty game getting a feel for the places where people can hide or flank the enemy.

If you can assed with the online sweating, I would recommend any of the Snipe Elite games very quiet, fun, and some impossible shots can be had and if you try the harder modes it is very difficult
