So I have arranged to buy a car. I have seen and driven it and agreed a price. The car 'lives' in Devon, I'm in the East Midlands, so we have agreed to do the handover at a mid point. So, the car will need to be 'taxed' for the journey to meet (it already is). As I understand it I then need to tax it myself...or, can I drive it home on his tax, he cancel it later and I retax it when at home?
In essence, can I drive it home on his tax. (I will, of course insure it before I collect it)

You can "tax" it online if you want at the handover point. Although provided it is done same day as he "untaxes it" it wont matter. In practice, it wont matter either way for a few days, it is not weeks though. I bought a motorbike in boxes last week, did the V5 online and 2 days later got a chase up to SORN or tax it!

Hi, yes, I know I can tax it on line, but I'm unsure of signal strength/availability at the meeting point, so I think I'll drive on 'his' tax then sort it at home.

That’s what I’d do.

Even if the seller un-taxes the car at hand-over, that RFL will still be valid until the end of the day,IIRC.

Same here - just drive it home on their tax

Isn’t it automatically untaxed now as part of the online new keeper change?
I sold a car last year and don’t remember a specific action to stop the tax.

If the signal is poor at the handover, you could just drive 5 mins to a better signal and do it then using the new keeper supplement.

Technically isn't it still taxed until the end of the month as you lose the month if cancelling at the start of that month?

OP just drive it home, make sure you have a time on the receipt and you will be fine

Nope - the tax is cancelled at the point of sale. Only complete months remaining are refunded however, so I see where you're coming from.

If he drives it home, I don't disagree that he will *probably* be fine, but technically, he is driving an untaxed vehicle.

Just dont complete change of ownership until arriving home - the car remains taxed - all fine

When I've sold cars or bikes, I don't get my refund until DVLA sort me the new V5.

Why would they sort you the new V5? The new V5 goes to the new keeper, surely, not the seller?

I meant DVLA hehe

Thus until that's done the car that I've sold is still taxed by me. Once they have the change of owner registered then I get my refund and they have hopefully taxed the car in their name.

Sorry, was trying to do two things at once and didn't explain myself properly, at all smile

I bought a new van last week.
We did v5 and tax online there and then.
If you have not got great reception, just drive until you have and use a suitable carpark or free WiFi at closest McDonald's.

It's disgraceful double taxation and a rip off! Can't believe they can get away with it...

To make life simple, agree with the seller to phone him when you get home and then he can process the V5C on line. If you do this during this month he will not get a refund on the unused days in February. So it is no loss to him. The bad news is you will have to tax it in your name and pay for the whole of February (unless of course if you SORN it till the 1st of March). I suspect you will want to use ..... new toy and all that, so therefore you will have to pay for the whole month and we are already ten days in.
I suspect some bright spark in a government office got a pay rise for thinking up this con that must make millions. As was pointed out by another contributor ...... it's just double taxation.

That sounds serious. What huge amount of money is he going to have to stump up for the "whole month's" tax?
