Hi guys, I am currently looking out for a 6 series 640D - something in the 2011-2014 year range as they are going for something in the region of 13K-20K - 20K being the top end of my budget.

I am looking at a range of considerations - colour, body styling, interior, extras etc and wondered how much mileage will impact how the car will drive. The more expensive ones have as little as 35,000 miles whereas the ones closer to 13/14K are like 80-100,000 miles. This may seem like a really stupid question, but would I notice much of a difference (if any) in terms of how it drives and feels between a car with 40,000 miles and 80,000 miles? Anything else to consider?

This is my first post on the forum - it probably shows! Any advice would be much appreciated and please feel free to tell me if the question is ridiculous!

Provided it has been looked after well, and it has a full service history, then the mileage won't matter quite as much. I have a Mercedes GLC350d that is just over 4 years old with 100k miles on it, and it doesn't feel any different to drive than it did when I had it brand new for example.

I took a 2012 F13 640d Coupe from 15k miles to 85k miles and it was a lovely car I thought.

Good luck with your search. thumbup

Amazing thank you very much! Anything to look out for in the 640D in terms of "must have" extras?

You're welcome. thumbup

They do come pretty well specced as standard, but the upgraded leather and heads up display are nice to have I think. Plus I always wished that mine had soft close doors. The adaptive suspension is supposed to be really good from what I've read as well.

There are loads of optional extras available for them I believe.

The 640d is a cracking car. Not sure if they all come with the HK stereo as standard but that would be something I would want.

Out of interest is serving a 640d any more expensive than say a 335d? More or less the same engine?

It is the same engine as the 335d. I found the insurance to be expensive on the 640d, and it was the most that I've paid for insurance out of all of the cars I've had.

I think the HK stereo is 2 notches above standard.

Out of interest, did anyone have a soft top and how was refinement impacted? Was it really tightly fitted?

I have a 640d coupe currently, had a 635d convertible prior and a friend has a 640d convertible...

The coupe is more refined by a small margin, they are big cars and convertibles prone to a bit of scuttle shake (more so when on runflats) but convertibles are nice when the time is right and look great.

Both models have great road presence however the coupe edges it for me for a more composed drive.

My car has HUD, Glass roof (a must in my opinion as it can appear dark without), HK stereo (takes some fine tuning but great when done!) Rear camera (these are not standard but worthwhile) Depending on the year of car take care with the LED lights, if they are active then they are pricey if go wrong. Post last 2015 headlight were upgraded to all LED (but not active so not as expensive to replace)

Comfort seats have more adjustment than the standard sports seats (i never tried both but i have no complaints with the sports seats in my car)

Extended leather over the dash with contrast stitching looks good and lifts the intrior a tad.

Post 2016 models have a full digitial dash, updated i drive and controller

Nice to haves;

Ceramic dials, i drive and gearleaver (rare but look classy)
Adaptive suspension
360 camera
Soft close doors
heated steering wheel

Servicing;

Just had a check and full service with oil, fuel and filterchange at a BMW independnt for £325

Brakes & pads all round (Brembo) £650 + fitting

Tryres - need to good and if 20" can be costly (mine will be reaplced with non run flats once they are ready for changing as they make a big differecne to to the ride and expectation of ride in a GT car (if that makes sense)

To add... Convertible roofs are very good, triple layered and quiet, you can raise and lower up to 25mph and the fact that you can open all windows (including the rear which doubles as a wind break) with a single button is very cool)

One downside - they can have drainage issues, not a problem if you know here to find them (guides avialble) but the rubber gromets in the drainage holes become jammed and fill up with debris. I had a seperate issue with my 635d where the inner door seal failed so when water ran down the the outside where intended it seeped in to behind the drivers seat in the footwell.

Worth checking both models for damp in all fotwells if you view any

Hope this helps

Cheers

Just took one for a test drive. The interior is lush, loads of room and super high quality - although compared to my Volvo S60 you almost have too much width and I couldn't rest my arms on the sides like I can in my Volvo.

It is very big! Wow, on the A3 coming out of London with w@nker white van men zooming past I was a bit rattled. I didn't enjoy it with the roof down as I was expecting less wind. But the soft tops look so much better with contrasting roof.

The boot size I'm not sure is practical for me. Even with hood up I don't think it would take the depth of my large suit case.

Re driving. I guess it's such a different animal to my 2004 Volvo which I feel is quote nimble. This car you need to give it a bit to get to 20 and then it gets to 100 in literally no time at all. My Volvo is the other way around which makes it better for around town.

I don't know where this all leaves me. I am someone who gets used to the configuration of everything I own. Car, telly, phone, flat etc and struggle with new feels. Maybe that's it? Or maybe I need a more nimble motor that's a tiny bit more practical?

They are big cars, and they definitely suit the more relaxed GT style of driving for me. I loved mine for its cruising ability and the overtaking punch, but it wasn't a massively rewarding car to drive overall though(especially in comparison to smaller and lighter cars).
