Hi all

I have an unlimited deal on Fibre to copper into my house with BT

They have just installed Full Fibre into the street and obviously want me to upgrade to it

I pay £30 per month and it looks like that will jump to £35-50 depending on technical things I don't fully understand.

One thing I don't know in making an upgrade is how much bandwidth I use because of the unlimited deal with BT

How do I proceed through this minefield as BT, SKY, Virgin all have their own tech speak so it's like comparing apples to oranges for me

Any help and advice would very very welcome?

Cheers all

If you’re happy with your current service, why pay more for fibre to the home ? In reality 76Mbps fibre to the cabinet, which is probably what you have now, is good enough for most needs.

I agree, if you don't need the speed then no point in paying extra for fibre. Also it can limit your options moving forward, far less providers to choose from, less competition, more expensive.

All providers are 'Unlimited' so don't let that get in the way, some do throttle if you're downloading lots but unlikely for normal usage.

Do a speedtest and see what you're getting https://www.speedtest.net

If you can get Virgin, then they are doing 100 Mbs. for £24/m

Cheers for that. I've just done speed test. . . . .
PING ms

DOWNLOAD Mbps
74.24
UPLOAD Mbps
15.32

I agree with you an others why pay more for no extra, but I do suffer from buffering at an evening when the world is online.

I was under the impression that full fibre would stop the buffering?

Cheers

There will be a few reasons you get buffering

1) there are several 4K streams coming into the house at the same time, along with someone who plays Warzone and regularly needs to download massive game updates, and the bandwidth they need is higher than your download speed
2) your WiFi connection to your router is poor (dependent on distance, house build, number of devices and other WiFi networks nearby)
3) BT operates traffic management in your area at peak time because they are serving too many customers

If 1) then full fibre will help
If 2) then full fibre will not help and you need a router with better wifi, or a mesh setup
If 3) then who is to say they won’t traffic manage on full fibre, but this is a bit of an unknown
