Need large electric SUV on a budget.

We have a Q5 Sportback, but for a month we’ve had a Mercedes GLE as a hire car while our car was in for repairs.

My wife has grown accustomed to the size of the GLE. And now the Q5 feels comparatively quite small and low down.

The Q5 is a gas guzzler too. It costs £80-£90 a week on petrol.

We likely couldn’t afford the GLE but the Q5 is in positive equity now (£1k when I last checked), and it’s time to get rid of it. My wife would be happy to climb down the brand ladder to get a vehicle of the same size as the GLE, but I want to change to electric to save the huge fuel bills.

What are our choices? Something like an electric Vauxhall that’s the size of a GLE/Q7 - that sort of thing.

PCP is how we’ll finance it. Won’t consider pre-owned.

I'm not sure of any large Vauxhall crossover types, but if you're on a budget then the MG ZS springs to mind as a fairly roomy car to do some research on and there are a fair number of them around. I did consider them once for a lease as they kept coming up on leasing.com once as the cheapest over the lease period and their prices on the used car market were also quite competitive.

There isn't anything, all the full size SUV EV's are big money.

As above there's nothing bigger than your Q5 which is electric and budget.

All the manufacturers except the big German brands and Land rover are all in the mid size SUV sector

Skoda Enyaq or VW ID.4 sounds like your best bet. Both around 40k with some decent spec. I think the Skoda looks better personally.

Kia Sorrento PHEV? Looks a big car, similar to a GLE. To be honest I found the GLE quite small inside compared to a Disco (not to mention them being hideous) so I’d think the Kia would be similar.

Depends on your definition of affordable, new Touareg's are not cheap in my book, they've also got an 18 month wait for a new order.

If it's big you want then you're going to pay for it. Audi Q7, X5, XC90, or much less common Kia Sorrento or Hyundai Santa Fe. For size and space MPV style Smax, Sharan/Alhambra are generally a bit cheaper.

If you want an Enyaq either take your choice of the relatively slim pickings second hand or be prepared to wait over a year for a new one. I ordered between Christmas and New Year 2021. Not expecting delivery until early 2023. As I want parking+ and assistance+ packs it’s basically new or nothing as this combination seems ultra rare

good point - OP will have to pay a ~£1000 premium for a lightly used one, like this, unless he doesn't mind waiting.

I was watching the Matt Watson Carwow review the other day and the battery range on the Skoda Maniac isn't great when you're utilising some of the gadgets and have a full load. Also the lethargic infotainment screen being where the climate controls are is automatically a put-off for me.

Loving the autocorrect! The infotainment might well improve: there is a major step in the software coming. Battery range is what it is. Either it’s good enough for your usage or it’s not. If it’s not the Model Y offers much better range at a significant increase in cost.
