NIP received out of time for unknown car - what's up?

My Dad has just received an NIP (dated 8th Feb) for a speeding offence from October 2021, referring to a car he has no knowledge of (he's never owned a Ford, which this is, let alone the specific vehicle).

First thought was this was a scam but entering the details from the NIP at acdp.met.police.uk shows associated info and pictures.

Presumably, the scumbag in the driver's seat has somehow got my Dad's details from the Internet and put those on the original NIP?

Annoyingly the PDF NIP does not appear to cater for "this car is nothing to do with me, and never has been" (it assumes you either are the owner, or used to be) although the online form does have an "other reason" box to fill in.

I'll get my Dad to fill in the online form, as above, but anything else to be concerned about?

I had one from the Met a couple of years back. I just enclosed a letter stating, not me, not my car, go away.

If there's no section for 'not my vehicle', write a letter explaining the situation and staple it to the s.172 form.

Complete the s.172 with whatever information you can provide, sign it and scrawl across it in big letters - 'Please see attached'.

Warn your Dad that he might start getting a few of these.

I've had 3 NIP's for speeding through, all for different vehicles that I've no knowledge of, plus a letter from a recovery yard with details on how to collect a car that had been seized for no insurance.

All were offences committed down South (I',m in Yorkshire) and all in the last couple of years.

These are for cars with correct plates on, rather than a cloned plate that belongs to me/the OP's Dad.

Surely a V5 would have come through the post along with the NIP's?

Doesn't need to, you can nominate who was driving the vehicle, they don't have to own it...

Thanks for the suggestion, but probably not. It's not his registration or car; just someone (apparently) putting his details on the NIP.

Be worth asking your Dad if he used a garage around the time of the offence and was loaned a courtesy car that he has forgot about.
