Dog barge hunting...

I'm looking to spend around £10k on something big and comfortable to waft up and down the motorway and act as the dog wagon at the weekends. I'd like to see 40mpg as some months might rack up 3000 miles in a week.

I'm finding myself sniffing around the following at approximately 10 years old or younger:

Mercedes CLS350 Shooting Brake - I love the way these look.
Mercedes CLS250 Shooting Brake - I automatically want the bigger engine, is there much real-world difference?
Mercedes E320 Estate - I had an S210 years ago, dull but extremely good at what it did.
Audi A6 Avant - Reliability issues?
Audi A6 Allroad - Pointless 4x4 capabilities that I would never use?
BMW 535d Touring - An obvious choice... but seem few and far between and/or remapped and thrashed.

Any input from owners or people in the know would be appreciated.

Does it have to be premium?
If the answer is preferably, then you can also maybe look at Volvo.
If the answer is No, then you can look at Mondeos, Peugeots, Passats, Skoda Superbs, etc etc.
You'll get newer, and possibly more toys, although you will probably end up with a 2 litre 4 pot diesel if you go down this route.

Out of your list, I'd be picking one of the Mercedes, maybe a BMW - you'll be able to get a nicer condition 530d vs a 535d. Here are some other ideas

The XF is a good option but you'll only get highish mileage cars at this price point, personally I'd look for the best E Class estate you can find.
