GAMING LAPTOP 3060 £900 max
Discussion
I've given up waiting for prices of new graphics cards to come down for the desktop my son uses.
As things stand he needs a new laptop anyway so I've stretched the budget from £500 to £900 to get a gaming laptop he can plug into a monitor when he gets home from school.
Please can anyone provide recommendations -
Looking at this :
MSI Katana GF66 | Nvidia RTX 3060 | Intel Core i7 11800H | 15.6-inch | 144Hz | 16GB RAM | 512GB SSD |
or a Lenovo Legion 5 at the moment -
Please- none of the usual PH "if you quadruple the budget you can get a 3080ti with 64gb ram....."

Don't forget that most gaming laptops weigh a ton and are not a lot less portable than a desktop, which is a major consideration if he's taking it to school every day. Anything with a dedicated GPU is going to be big, heavy, and have a seriously compromised battery life. Think of it more as "transportable" from A to B rather than anything which is intended to be used on the go.
I went through this about 6 months and did months of research before I bough my laptop.
Be aware that the MSI Katana GF66 only has the 85W version of the 3060, as opposed to the full fat 130W as fitted to the Lenovo Legion.
However, the Legion 5 has a fairly dim 120Hz, 250 Nits screen.
In the end I went for the Legion Pro with the Ryzen 7 5800h 16GB and full 130W 3060. It also comes with a 16 inch 2560 x 1600 500 Nits screen which is frankly amazing. It is so good that every other monitor I have tried with it looks terrible compared to the laptop screen. However, it only comes with a 256GB SSD, but you can easily add another if need be.
These are £1249, but Lenovo are constantly doing a 10% off voucher if you sign up to their newsletter so it ended up costing me £1125. A lot, but I have not regretted if for a second.

A few months back I bought a legion 5 - ryzen 5, 3060 video card, 16gb ram.
I’ve upgraded the ram, but only because I’m a dcs junkie (flight sim), which it runs well even using vr.
I’m very happy with it, can run most games on high settings and runs nice and cool too. I would recommend it.
