Sorry about this, but I have been trying to contact a company to purchase an ISP account to allow my Chief Exec to dial up in China.

One of the biggest (UUNET only do 20 or more user accounts) is Pipex - but they don't do China.

Can anyone out there recommend a supplier?

Sorry if you don't understand what I am on about but the ones who understand will...

Anyway back to the footie/porn/costume drams's...

Edited - to remove the leery footie tw£ts outside my office in Cardiff

I wouldn't bother trying to dial up in China, to be honest. They put extremely tight restrictions on their ISPs and you wouldn't get a lot of western content.

You've be better off making an international phone call back to the UK for dialup.

It would just be for email retrieval.

Here is the exaxt transcrpt of the conversation between me and the Chief Exec:

CE: I want to be able to get my emails in China, can you make sure I can dial up and get them please.
Me: Er, Well it's not quite that simple
CE: Why
Me: I need to get you a roaming ISP account
CE: A who?
ME: It allows you to be able to dial up in any country la la la
CE: Do it, heres my credit card no. etc
Me: When do you leave?
CE: Tommorrow
Me: Dohhhhh!
Me: Thats going to be hard, especially as China is really difficult to get connections in
CE: I'm sure you IT guys can sort it
ME: (again) It's not quite that simple
CE: Just do it - or I will find somebody who can...
ME: Dohhhhh!

Can he use his mobile to connect?

The only other option is to dial the UK as previously mentioned.

We went down the UUNET / Pipex route for a client - what a nightmare.

We ended up using MSN, much better. I couldn't comment on China though

I think it's gonna be an international call for him.

I've got much more important things than setting him up to get his personal emails - he dosen't want to connect to the office - just pick his other 'office' emails up...

I'll keep you guys posted though if I find something good...

Neil another solution is get your big cheese a global dialling card, from one of the global providers. Concert (now BT Ignite use to do one), Worldcom use to have one too but I'm not sure if they still do. AT&T have a global dialling card but I'm not sure if you could get one by tomorrow.

The dialling card works like one of those phone cards you get when you are on holiday except you enter in a pin # before connecting into a local rate number.

He should just ring you and you could check his PC in the office.

Are the restrictions on Hong Kong any laxer for ISP's ? If so you might be able to use one of them as the place tends to be a lot more "western" etc

Neil, if he wants e mail access, why not set him up an ISP e mail account, or if your corporate is Internet facing and POP3, why not use something like mail2web ? He can go into a cafe and check his mail from anywhere then.

Relpying to the two last posts, and Teds, GregE240, I cant even get him set remote connect from home (even though he is set up with the most simple solution - dial up to the internet and you will see the network...so getting him in a Cafe (in China?) will be impossible. Webmail - whats webmail?

Mel, We have got an office in Hong Kong, and yes we will 'forward' any of his more important office emails, but for his personal account (POP3) it is a little harder.

Ted, the less he phones me, the better. Especially when he is in the East, how many hours ahead are they...? Cue one phone call at home at 3.00am in the morning "How do get these email thingies?"

Groan...

Edited to say I still haven't had a coffee yet and the phones ringing already....

Get him a Nokia 7650 and configure the email client on that to dial in and get his emails (it has full POP3/IMAP4 capability).

It won't help if he wants to see attachments, but for those "important personal" text only emails it'll be fine.

If he needs to view attachments then choose the Nokia 9210i: that'll let him see Microsoft Excel spreadsheets, Word documents & PowerPoint presentations (might take some time to download though ).

Oh, and he can always use it to call you and ask for advice at any time.......

He has a Ericcson T38 at present, I never thought of doing that. But then again he has a blutooth car PMCIA card I got him, so really I should be utilising that.

OK, click on WebMail for a full explanation.

Basically, you put in your e mail address and your pop3 password and you have access to your mailfile. There's even a CWAP version too, so you can access it via mobile phone. HTML looks cack though.

Found a goodie with Via Net.Works - they quite helpful - and they also seem fairly reasonable.

And most important of all - they have connectivity in China!

see here www.vianetworks.co.uk

Edited for my complete lack of understanding of laws of html...

Try GRIC - they have lots of China based ISPs

www.gric.com/network/isp_locator.html#co14

You can buy the account from any of the UK ones (www.gric.com/network/isp_locator.html#co80) - Easynet is a well trusted one...

Are you sorted? If not can you not just set him one up over here and make the bugger make an international call? Have you checked the phone network in China will allow him to dial the appropriate number? I was the technician for the Manchester uni one, we allowed people to dial us using a special 0161 number but even so, some people still couldn't connect to us because of the telphone network restrictions on international calls. Generally with the 0161 they could, but foreign networks don't like giving access to 0845 and other such numbers.
