Hi all,

We've been going down to france for the last 7 years or so, and we love it. We've stayed at fantastic campsites in the Loire and the Dordogne, but they've always been 4 or 5 star sites with lots of activities/pools/bars, etc. which has always worked well with young kids.

However, we're now more mobile having traded the caravan for a new trailer tent and would like to start going to some less obvious places. More out of the way, hard to get to, scenic spots.

France, Italy, Germany or the like.

Would love to find some gems that we can go to!

Thanks in advance.

Used this one many times in the past - quite busy at Monaco GP time but otherwise lovely

In the grounds of a Chateau in Normandy?

I've not been to this place (they don't allow caravans) but have been following them on Facebook for a while and it seems very nice.

They do allow trailer tents.

Thanks guys, keep them coming!

For example next year I'm considering Italy and Slovenia. Much lighter rig so keen to do bigger miles and venture further afield!

Found one in Italy that was fantastic, by the side of a lake with the mountains in the background... no hope of ever finding it again though.

Archies is brilliant for finding campsites. Not tried the app but have the POI file on my Tomtom and used it a lot on touring trips to just find the nearest campsite when we want to stop. Assuming the app is similarly map based you should be able to find a nice quiet scenic area and then look for nearby sites.

Several years ago my girlfriend (now wife) and I did a two week Euro trip with a teardrop caravan and a Fiesta. Our favourite scenic campsite was Camping Des Glaciers, which as the name suggests was backed by a magnificent glacier and surrounded by woods and alpine meadows.

Stayed for 10 days at Les Glaciers du Camping, stunning location, plenty of trails to hike, and views to see. I set off up the Glacial valley and reached my highest point. Around 2800 metres.

Also did the St Barnards Pass, and a trip over to Chamonix, all in easy striking distance.

Couple of favourite spots in Europe are Ile de Re, off the coast by La Rochelle and Interlaken in Switzerland. Not been to either since we have had kids (20 years) so I won't make specific campsite recommendations but both beautiful......

Thanks Mike.

Have been to Il de Re, that and La Rochelle/surrounding areas are pretty rammed these days in the summer.

Went to Interlarken with my parents probably 25 years ago - can't really remember much so will give it another look!

Camping Wang near Interlaken is nice.

I used to own a campsite in the Pyrenees,Camping Le Montagnou, very close to the Spanish frontier on the French side. The area is quiet with excellent walking and stunning scenery.

We stayed at Camping Aiguille-Noire when visiting the Celtica festival a few years ago, litterally underneath Mont Blanc!

Really quite nice, was very busy due to the festival but lovely location!

Just to add to this, we are leaving tomorrow for our trip, original plan was:

Day 1 - Chunnel to Bruges
Day 2 - Bruges to Camping Herrenwies (black forest)
Day 4 - Camping Herrenwies to a lodge in Damuls (Austria)
Day 6 - Damuls to Lazy Rancho (Interlaken)
Day 8 - Lazy Rancho to Camping des Glaciers (La Fouly)
Day 10 - La Fouly to Reims
Day 11 - home via Chunnel

We may spend another night in Bruges and get a b&b near Baden-Baden instead, looking at the horrific weather forecast this weekend.

Anyone got any ideas for things to do around Damuls/Interlaken/La Fouly. Currently only have a train up to Schyinge Platte when in Interlaken

If you only have one full day in the Interlaken region, rather than Schynige Platte, I'd suggest the following:

Train to Grindelwald, the new Eiger Express cable car to Eigergletscher, c45min walk to Kleine Scheidegg. Then either train to Wengen or c1hr walk to Maennlichen and take the cable car to Wengen. c1hr walk from Wengen to Lauterbrunnen or take the train.

If you have time take the cable car from Lauterbrunnen to Grutschalp, you can then take the train to Murren or walk it (about an hour) and take the train back to Grutschalp. Train back from Lauterbrunnen to Interlaken Ost. From Murren you also have the cable car to the Schilthorn.

If you have the time and the weather then a trip to Jungfraujoch from Kleine Scheidegg is well worth it (but pricey), just note it is always busy.

If you're into hiking then the c6.5hr walk from Schynige Platte to Grindelwald First is a must do.

https://www.jungfrau.ch/en-gb/jungfrau-travel-pass... this might save you money, even if you only get 1-2 days in the region, the 3 day pass will offer savings and give you the benefit of hop-on/hop-off all transport so you can chop and change plans on the fly.
