Getting really close to getting the chim now, took a few out on the weekend. What I would like to know is,

1)how much does it cost to fill one up ?
2)roughly how many miles to a tank ?
3)how ridgedly do you have to stick to the 6000 miles servicing intervals ?
4)how much are they for a major and minor service ( independant ) ?
5)can any one recommend a independant guy around uxbridge/windsor area ?
6) tyres, is it a really stupid idea to put lower speed rated tyres on it to save some money on them, if you know your not going to go flat out, also woulf this save money ?
7)how much do you boys put aside each year to run a chimaera, not inc insurance
8)any real difference in running costs of a 4 litre 4.5 and 5 litre ?

Lots of questions, any help or info greatfully accepted.

er... about £40.. ish

mmm... about 240 if you are sensible... I get around 200-220 most of the time.

On the nose. If you're doing less than 6000 miles per year then I'd go for a single 12k service annually.

Just paid £420 at Leven. Top job

Can't help on that score...

YES! Not only is it dangerous, but you may actually invalidate your insurance.

Check my profile for running costs... for 450 as a daily driver.

Cheers I heard people talking of filling up the tank costing £70, and getting 200miles, which did kind of scare the living sh1t out of me. the tyre thing was just an idea, didn't think it would work.

55 litre tank = 50squids

2)roughly how many miles to a tank ?

I aim for around 200-220miles, now that I've a fully functional speed sensor

3)how ridgedly do you have to stick to the 6000 miles servicing intervals ?

service interval is 6000 miles or 12 months, given the nature of the beast, I'd not be tempted to deviate from this. it'll almost certainly affect resale if you don't get it serviced at the right intervals

4)how much are they for a major and minor service ( independant ) ?

my local indie quotes £220 for minor and £360 for major

5)can any one recommend a independant guy around uxbridge/windsor area ?
6) tyres, is it a really stupid idea to put lower speed rated tyres on it to save some money on them, if you know your not going to go flat out, also woulf this save money ?

stupid? I'd say so. apart from presumably completely violating the T&Cs of your insurance, I'd imagine that higher spec tyres are also better build to withstand the stresses caused by high acceleration and braking. would you put remolds on a sports car?

7)how much do you boys put aside each year to run a chimaera, not inc insurance

hmmmm, lots. mine feels like it's going through a phase of "everything has reached its natural lifespan" and is giving up the ghost. I usually allow a few hundred squid for each visit to the garage

8)any real difference in running costs of a 4 litre 4.5 and 5 litre ?

<shurg>not that I can tell from these forums. the 500s may drink a little more petrol?

Lots of questions, any help or info greatfully accepted.

Ho wempty is your tank ?? (approx 45/50 of optimax from empty, try not to let it run low though

2)roughly how many miles to a tank ?

How heavy is your right foot, my 500 will need filling up after 220/250 depending how heavy my foot is...

3)how ridgedly do you have to stick to the 6000 miles servicing intervals ?

How much of a resale do you want from it, mine has mine has limited history but has had all th ebig servicing done by a main dealer

4)how much are they for a major and minor service ( independant ) ?

£300 - £600

5)can any one recommend a independant guy around uxbridge/windsor area ?

Nope, i use an indie in North Harrow - Rover specialist and now a TVR specialist

6) tyres, is it a really stupid idea to put lower speed rated tyres on it to save some money on them, if you know your not going to go flat out, also woulf this save money ?

Yes, yes, you'd also need to be taken outside and shot though....

7)how much do you boys put aside each year to run a chimaera, not inc insurance

minimum 2k, depends on the car, mines for sale at the moment and it shouldnt cost a penny bar normal servicing, tyres and petrol...

8)any real difference in running costs of a 4 litre 4.5 and 5 litre ?

Negligible, how hard you going to drive it ??

Lots of questions, any help or info greatfully accepted.

I forgot to say, i'm really local to you if you want to have a nose at a clean well maintained example now its sorted and up for sale...

Alternatively its the Ace Cafe TVRCC Middlesex meet this Friday if you want to pop along for a ride and a nosey on...

To be honest I don't actually monitor how much I put in the tank... it'd probably scare the sd out of me...

If it gets down to 1/4 full, then I fill it you're looking at around £40... although proces round here fluctuate from 86.0 to 98.9 for Super at the moment...

I try and keep my profile up to date, and put the costs in the appropriate fields (insurance, upgrades, etc, etc) so it should give you an idea... although I do a fair mileage.

1/ I think a tank of Optimak in mine is about £43
2/ I get up to 250 miles (5L engine!)
3/ Stick to the servicing (either 6000 miles ot 1 year)
4/ Servicing is about £400 minor £600 major at a TVR dealer - if you go independant you can save a few hundred quid, but won't get to say FTVRSH!!!!
5/ Can't help!
6/ You're right, its a stupid idea
7/ I've only budgetted for servicing costs, but had a few minor things go wrong (accelerator cable snap, coolant sensor, thermostat...) so nothing to really worry about, but then I spent lots on getting it rolling roaded etc... but that was my choice!
8/ I've only run a 5L, but I don't think its any different - servicing is the same, it might use a bit more oil and fuel, but nothing significant - not enough to put you off buying a 5L (if that's what you want - which of course you do )

I'd rate some indie's way above some main dealers.

My car was inspected by a Main Dealer and 2 indie's prior to purchase. The main dealer gave it a clean bill of health, and the two indie's found some items that need attention... rather urgently

1) Mine costs around £30-35 for Optimax, though I always fill mine up when I get down to about a qtr tank.

2) I get between 150 and 200 miles, as said though I try not to let it go down below a qtr so on a full tank probably 220 - 250 miles.

3) Rigidly - especially if you want to sell it later on, it's either 6k or 12 monthly - whichever comes first. Major service every 12k or 12 mths, minor service every 6k.

4) Minor - £260 at Offords
Major - £360 at Offords

5) Sorry can't help on this one.

6) Yes it is stupid, remember they are the things sticking a very high performance car with no driver aids to the road. You want to save a couple of quid then don't come crying to us when it all goes wrong.

7) At the moment I run mine on a PAYG basis - though I will be setting aside a grand of my works bonus in Jan to cover any emergencies.

8) Apart from differing fuel & insurance costs they should all be the same. They all use essentially the same engine and parts so providing all 3 models are good ones then they should cost the same to run.

1)how much does it cost to fill one up ?

About £50 on opti max

2)roughly how many miles to a tank ?

Depends on what your doing, about 250 on a motorway, and about 100 hoonig

3)how ridgedly do you have to stick to the 6000 miles servicing intervals ?

I do it my self and it gets an oil and filter change every 3000 miles, and a full 12K service every 6000 miles (over kill it may be, but its never let me down!)

4)how much are they for a major and minor service ( independant ) ?

Between 250-400 for a minor and 400-800 for a major

5)can any one recommend a independant guy around uxbridge/windsor area ?

Sorry

6) tyres, is it a really stupid idea to put lower speed rated tyres on it to save some money on them, if you know your not going to go flat out, also woulf this save money ?

Yes it is stupid and No you wont save money! A Toyo for the rear is only about £80. Very good value for money.

7)how much do you boys put aside each year to run a chimaera, not inc insurance

Abour 1500

8)any real difference in running costs of a 4 litre 4.5 and 5 litre ?

No, but a 5.0 may be more expensive to insure, and will be a little bit thirstier on fuel and oil.

Strangely enough, I insured mine with Tesco (£500ish fully comp) and it was cheaper to insure the 5L than the 4L!!!! Don't ask why - I don't know

Great, Got the yellow beast back yesterday, feels like its gained an extra 2 inches of peddle travel, its a lot lot quicker than the last time you were in it, at Vmax the spark was breaking down around 5000rpm, acting like a rev limiter, now it whistles straight up to 6000 ish ( )

feels like a different car, need to learn how to drive it again !!

7) I put aside £145 per month for the Griff, but that's including about £500 per year for insurance. That covers me for one service, MOT, road tax, and two tyres. Anything else comes out of savings or contingency.

Beware of assuming 'fixed price quotes' for servicing will represent your final servicing bill. There's invariably something else on top of a normal service to be done, although you might be lucky. I budget about £800 per year for servicing (one service) and maintenance, then if I underspend, it goes in the track day fund

8) I've had a 4 litre and a 5. Mr Rude and my sister both run 4.5L models. There's a wee bit of difference in fuel consumption under normal use (about 20 miles to the tank), but if it would make the difference between you being able to 'afford it', or not afford it, then frankly don't buy one; you can't afford it!

Also it depends how you drive it. My 220/230 miles to the tank can come down to 120 miles to the tank if I work the car, and even further on trackdays!

1)how much does it cost to fill one up ? If you want fuel economy you are looking at the wrong make and model.

3)how ridgedly do you have to stick to the 6000 miles servicing intervals ? Like a limpet! Even at 6k a service I really notice the car feeling much tighter all round following a service. Missing services would seem to be a good way to guarantee a visit to the scenery in my opinion.

6) tyres, is it a really stupid idea to put lower speed rated tyres on it to save some money on them, if you know your not going to go flat out, also woulf this save money ? Not stupid at all! Just make sure your will is up to date - no need to leave the Chim to anyone though as it'll be written off in the accident.

7)how much do you boys put aside each year to run a chimaera, not inc insurance I like to have a fund of a couple of grand just in case. See my profile for running costs - I'm in a particularly expensive year just now, so they are probably near the top end.
