Hot hatch…..automatic

[Slow progress]

Due to a change in circumstances (wife’s left knee has just had to be completely rebuilt after a dislocation) we’d like to know what the best auto hot hatches are for about £9k. I’ve no experience with the different auto box options out there so any guidance would be helpful.

If I was going for a Golf it would have to be the R32, no it's not as sharp as the GTI but the GTI isn't that sweet a steer anyway so I'd pay the extra tax for that cultured 6 pot:

Most auto hot hatches you encounter will probably be dual clutch autos. A few like the BMW 130i use traditional torque converters that are more robust. In any case I wouldn't believe all the scare stories around dual clutch boxes, most are fine - I have had two cars that have them with no problems. Just make sure you buy a car with full service history that has had the gearbox oil replaced when it was due. Try to find out of the car uses a wet clutch or dry clutch if going for a dual clutcher - the wet clutch cars tend to be more reliable.

I'd probably go Golf GTi as a good all rounder, the R32 is a good shout but obviously fuel and tax costs are higher.
The GTi can be livened up easily with a stage 1 map if you fancy a bit more poke.

Golf gti , but personally I’d go r32 that engine get under your skin and justifys tax and fuel ,I know , I’m being proper biased , tbh I’m looking at getting a gti also ,whilst I take the r off the road for body work to be done , I’ve changed most of suspension and got it it running sweet ,

Not what to get more a what not to get! I'm one of the weirdos on PH who actually likes autos, this was however severely tested when I owned a Cooper S Clubman. Whilst it is a lovely place to sit and it steers nicely I just didn't like the auto - it just felt like it always wanted a different gear to what I wanted (both higher and lower depending on situation)
