does anyone else watch reaction videos? I've caught a few which seem to be a mixture of utter, utter bilge and totally unbelievable through amusing and a few which are genuinely interesting/insightful.

Yes. Usually the voice coach/producer/pro breakdown videos rather than the random person with a YouTube channel reactions.

The Charismatic Voice (Elizabeth Zharoff, opera singer and metal fan) is probably the one I watch most.

cheers for that - she is quite interesting and her deconstruction of singing appeals (she seems to love Beast in Black, which is no bad thing IMO)

Every video I've had the misfortune of clicking on appears to be some leech trying the absolute bare minimum to fall under the 'criticism' copyright exemption, so they can ride on the coat tails of actual musicians. No matter how many times I tell Youtube's algorithm to stop suggesting them, they just keep appearing.

Not a reaction video as such but I quite enjoy Rick Beatos song breakdowns on his YouTube channel.

His videos on Nirvana's Smells Like Teen Spirit and Slipknots Before I Forget are a particularly good watch.

Take a look at The Fairy Voice Mother on YouTube. She’s a voice coach and give proper insight rather than a majority of the song reaction creators out there.

This is one I really like; I've no idea what he's talking about (I'm not musically trained) but it's interesting as he discusses a track I know well.

+1 thumbup

Been following her since she started doing proper rock videos. To be honest, all the rest are simply not as good. The Daily Doug used to be good; but over a year or so ago he's not been the same. He's lost his way, in some way. Can't put my finger on it.

In addition to the Charismatic Voice; I also watch Rick Beato (much more than Elizabeth). Although his are not 'reaction' videos; I find most of them compelling viewing.

I think a lot of it just boils down to people watching for the person doing it and/or validation of what they like. Like most of the 'vocal coaches' seem to end up falling into this model of liking everything and giving little criticism, that's how reactions on YT are sadly - be too in depth you might lose the viewers there for the personality, be too critical you lose those there for validation. Some actually are at least breaking down the singing to some level, but there are some issues there too.

Has anyone come across Zach Ansley? A few years ago he tried to get going doing in-depth vocal analyses, in particular around vocal health and technique, but certain 'vocal coach' reactors threatened him (one tried to get him sacked from his job I think!) to try to force him off the platform, as well as one plagiarising him - there is or was a certain cabal trying to protect the model of liking everything. He has been very critical of vocal reactors his main issue with them being the lack of actual critique, and that includes those with actual credentials (Charismatic Voice being one, I don't mind her enthusiasm and I have heard a small amount of criticism from her at times. And that Australian girl - who I think is also an academic as he is), some are pushing quack vocal techniques even or those bad for vocal heath (nobody mentioned here btw). I think he feels lack of detail on vocal health and the limited criticism means some might try to sing like others in a way that is damaging. He has said he actually rates that 'big brain singer' channel, which surprised me as I didn't hear much criticism in the few videos I have seen.

I keep ending up watching or searching something to find these for some reason, purely out of curiosity or something to do. I like Doug, one of few who actually goes into proper detail musically - and will criticise composition choices. About him being off the boil, I don't watch all his vids, but seems to be going into less detail lately maybe? He could do with a break perhaps, as this is his only work currently. I check what Critical Reactions has covered sometimes too - goes into immense detail on composition, critical listening like that doesn't have much in common with how I consume music (even if I am critical in my own way) but its interesting.

There's one channel that go into more and better quality detail than anyone else I've seen when it comes to lyrics - Vin & Sori - Vin has great knowledge on a lot of things, but isn't as clever as he thinks he is however. Their religious fundamentalism is alien to me/us here despite being anti evangelism and not at all puritan - it sort of put me off ever subbing though I've probably watched them occasionally for 3 years now. They seem to have low view figures now but they must be making some bank on Patreon.

I quite like the reaction videos to Steven Wilson's "Routine". They usually end up with the viewer crying their eyes out

There are a few songs and artists that do the rounds on most of the reaction channels, Disturbed - Sound of Silence is an obvious one. Jinjer - Pisces (Live Session) is a good one, if you know the song or the band you know why hehe .

Watch no life shaq, his Metallica reactions are brilliant, so much so a black rap fan from the south is now a Metallica fan.

Rick is a musical polymath.

Notwithstanding his skill playing guitar / keys / bass, he understands music theory like Neo understands The Matrix. This is one of my favourite Beato vids (just for the dazzling breakdown of each section of the tune, and admitting that even he can't get his head around some of the chord and key changes):-

Daily Doug did Radiohead - Paranoid Android hehe .

Quite a few times in this he's trying to work out whats coming next, and gets blown sideways when the song does something else.

I don't know what his credentials are but it's when you hear people semi analyse pieces of music like that you realise how outstanding it is. That particular song is goosebump inducingly good.
