"To beat the criminals, Gillespie suggests investing at least £50 in a heavy-duty plastic sleeved chain to be passed around the cable and through the wheel spokes, then padlocked. He adds: 'Electric car owners do not immediately think about the value of their chargers or why they should be kept safe under lock and key.' "

Once the cable is untethered at each end, how exactly will the chain help confused

Also, for all the numbers the daily fail have packed in to that article there isn't any mention of how many cable thefts actually occur. It says it's on the increase so they must have some figures... I wonder why they didn't print them...

The cable locks in at either end anyway. The car has a lock, the charger has a lock. To steal the cable the thief has to vandalise the car and charger.

Easy pickings with basic tools. If you need to charge away from home it's worth carrying a spare.

Usual garbage from the DM:

'...a new crime wave sweeping the UK...'

'..Experts predict these thefts could...'

'....Branded replacements can cost up to £700....'

'...Typically 15ft long...'

'...There are currently no official figures on cable thefts...'

So much fail on one article!

It was only a matter of time, before a paper decided to tell EVERYONE how lucrative these cables are to steal.

We can now look forward to some compo claims where some promising rapper decides to cut through a live cable with a hacksaw and negligence is claimed because 6ft warning signs were not emblazoned over the side of the car etc..

At least the police advice is practical. Keep the cable out of site and stay with the car whilst charging.

Hard to do the former whilst the car is charging though, and unlikely to manage the latter when it takes 12 hours overnight to charge at home frown

There's only one thing for it. I'll get rid of the EV and go back to ICE. The endless cable thefts along with the car constantly bursting into flames is just too much.

Great, then they can republish articles about fuel tank thefts, exploding fuel tanks, .... hehe

On the speakev forums this is being discussed with the usual mild hilarity that accompanies almost anything published by the "comic" DM around EV's etc.

No one has reported having their cable stolen across all the forums, as far as can be found. Certainly there's no epidemic of postings about it, which you would expect on a forum which has good representation across brands etc and is quite UK centric.

It's also pointed out that the scrap metal value of a cable is probably around £5, not £50 as per the article - which actually is pretty good accuracy for the DM! I don't think cat theft (with all those lovely valuable metals) is at any risk of dying out with the returns from cables.

The article also seems to ignore that most home points are tethered so reasonably difficult to nick, and that cables are generally locked into the cars when plugged in, so again fairly difficult to nick.

I agree with the point about tethered cables being hard to steal - at least if you want to keep it intact for the sake of flogging it. Otherwise, as pointed out above, you just have a few quids worth of copper for your efforts.

I wasn't aware of this either....'the ban on petrol and diesel-only cars coming in just eight years'.

like that's going to be a deterrent - I'd imagine that it's potentially easier than swiping cats. As an aside is this 'news' surprising to anyone?

To be fair it does say 'new' petrol and diesel only cars, which is broadly correct.

Yeah, I don't think it's going to take off as a crime wave myself. We might end up with some shocking statistics of how really nice young lads who never put a foot wrong and were total pillars of the community start killing themselves by trying to steal cables. We'll ignore the mary-jane leaf logos on their social media profiles to keep the sob story at maximum impact though.

Anything that makes the theft more difficult and/or the stolen item less valuable is a deterrent. It's not an outright prevention but certainly a deterrent.

Time will tell to what extent it deters.. personally, I'm not particularly worried.

We’ll just end up with reinforced cables and stronger locking mechanisms. It’s not something that can’t be resolved.

normally with a top comment of "I'm not buying an EV until they can do 3000 miles on a single charge and be recharged in under 14 seconds, also they need to be cheaper so that I can buy one for a fiver and have change for a fish supper"
