In a bit of a conundrum recently. I have a (proper wink ) Defender hardtop with only two seats, and until October last year was leasing an A35 for my wife/family duties. Back in July last year I signed up to lease a Touareg Black Edition which was supposed to come end of October, yeah right. After various date changes it now looks like a September/October delivery this year.

Rewind a couple of months and I bought my 16 year son a Fiesta 1.25 as an early birthday present for my wife to use temporarily. When I bought it, the VW was due early in the year so I thought we wouldn't have to rely on it too long. With the situation as it is now, the Fiesta really isn't suitable for longer term use for what we require and it has me thinking what on earth to do.

Do we battle it out and stick with the Fiesta? I do have access to my dad's GLA if needed, do I buy something like an A3/Golf which is a bit more practical but not really what we need longer term, buy something like a c2013/14 X5 or Cayenne (bork potential) and sell later in the year once/if the VW arrives? or cancel the lease (which is quite a good deal) and buy something dearer/newer to keep? I was offered a Q7 black edition brand new for immediate delivery recently but bailed as the monthlies are a lot higher than the VW. With used car prices as they are I am sort of inclined to carry on with the Fiesta but I absolutely hate driving it.

There is also the concern that I could wait another 6 months and VW pull the deal...

I am guessing a few others on here are in this sort of position?!

I'd cancel the lease (if you can), sell the Ford and buy yourself a nice SUV

What sort of A35 can you lease?
I thought they stopped making the them in 1958. I haven’t seen one in ages.

Trouble is, the Ford is ultimately my son's car so if I sell it, he'll only need another in a few months.

Actually more like 14-15 months. It was a pretty good deal (very good by today's prices), obviously when I signed up I probably naively thought it would come when the old car went back. Ordinarily I wouldn't wait this long for any car but these aren't normal times. I would like to cancel but am I cutting my nose to spite...?

Fish around first. What's the deal that you are expecting?

Looking at it objectively VW could continue to move your deal back in the hope that you eventually cancel anyway. So you've effectively got a good deal on nothing currently?

Definitely agree! And that's my fear, but to move into anything else in this sector is really expensive currently. I guess VW have the intention of fulfilling orders, but how realistic is it?! I am happy at £600-650 pcm on a lease, don't really want to PCP. Never done it, and seems a little pointless in laying out a much bigger deposit and highly monthly payments when I'd have no intention of buying it, granted there may or may not be some equity in it. The benefit of sticking with my son's car is attractively financially but that's it. Now, if someone could start producing semi conductors they'd be laughing smile

Thanks will take a look. Have exhausted most of the brokers I can find to see if anything suitable, either long lead times or massive prices for a smaller SUV.

I think things might be freeing up for VW, they're quoting 15 weeks on some new orders which is only a few more weeks than the 12 they used to quote.
With a lease, you can cancel right up until the day before can't you?

I took delivery of an M40 X3 in May 2020, but they said i could pull the plug 24 hours before (refund). If that's the case just leave it rolling and see how things go. I think equilibrium will be reached in mid 22. I just don't see how prices are sustainable when the UK is plunging into a cost of living crisis. I know there's a problem with supply / demand, but I think people will just shore up their cash.
