Have been looking at these for a while. Some cars seem to stick around. Would welcome your views

1. GTS v Turbo
2. Must have spec
3. Long term a better bet than 991.2
4. Colours to avoid
5. Do you think prices might soften over spring with people maybe tightening their belts?
6. Recent cars Cayman GTS and GT4 will I be pleased or disappointed going to a 991?

Thanks

Both quite different to your two Caymans. I think you’re only going to know by driving them.

The .1 GTS is a characterful car with no GPF filters and no turbos. That generation of GTS is more of a sports car then the .1 Turbo which I would say is when the Turbo model hit ‘peak GT’. Horses for courses.

1. Turbo all day - more smiles per mile
2. Turbo comes pretty much fully loaded. Maybe Front axle lift if you have speed humps or steep drive
3. If GTS reckon NA is better bet - if Turbo and you can afford newer - why not
4. You're buying it for yourself - buy the colour you like
5. Who knows?
6. Turbo is a different kettle of fish - go drive one and compare

This junior GT3 is the one.

you'll have much more fun pushing a base than a Turbo. A Turbo is like having a Marshall stack at home, you'll be lucky to use anything above volume 5.

I've owned a 991.1 Carrera GTS which was followed by a 991.2 Carrera 4 GTS, without doubt in my opinion, the 991.2 C4GTS was the "better" car for me. Before I bought the 991.2 C4GTS I had a back to back Porsche Experience drive in a 991.2 C4S and a 991.2 Turbo . At the time (Jan 2017) the 991.2 GTS had only just been announced so a test drive was not possible but my OPC fixed me up with that back to back drive as I was looking at a high spec C4 GTS or a minimal spec Turbo (not the S) for around the same price. In the end I felt the C4 GTS had more useable performance, the Turbo is very quick but (and it's a big but) you really cannot exploit it without exceeding speed limits by a huge margin. On the other hand my C4 GTS with PCCB, Sport PASM (-10mm), PDCC and Rear Axle Steer was effectively all the chassis options of a Turbo S but with less power and torque. It was still a very rapid 911 with 450HP and 550Nm of torque, and needed very little road length for overtaking. Pressing the centre button of the drive select switch gave 20 seconds of everything set to maximum, the resulting acceleration was astonishing.
Compared to my 991.1 GTS my 991.2 C4 GTS was so much quicker to accelerate, granted the engine note was not quite the same but mine was a pre GPF model so it still had a nice exhaust and induction sound but rather muted. With the 991.1 GTS it had to be revved to get the performance from it but the 991.2 C4 GTS with peak torque at 2150 RPM delivered fantastic performance with just a slight flex of the right ankle.
I replaced it with a 992 GT3 but I do miss some of the performance characteristics of my former 991.2 C4 GTS.

I do not miss the sharp throttle response of na on road hence turbo all day long for me. Different level of car and I have fun at fast and slow speeds in ours. Its a gen 2 cab. Boulevard cruiser most of the time but when conditions allow my God as others say its a ballistic missile. yikes

They do need a Europipe 2 50 cel sports exhaust to come alive. Changes character of a turbo. Bit more edge to the car. No need for remap or anything just plug and play.

1. If you want a car that raises the hairs on your neck with one of the best flat6 howls going, then get the 991.1 GTS. Its a far more involving drive than the Turbo IMO. If speed is important, then obviously the turbo, but the GTS is not slow by any stretch...at all. The outright speed of the turbo becomes boring very quickly.

2. SPASM

3. Yes, the 991.1 GTS prices have risen above the curve, OPC's are quite keen on buying them up from owners at the moment.

4. Personal choice, there are a few nice PTS cars but they're rare.

5. Not on the GTS, but probably on the turbo. The 991.1 GTS will always be more sight after due to small volume of cars available and it being the last of the NA Carreras

6. Had a couple of Caymans myself, but it's difficult to say whether you'll be disappointed or not. I've found that with the 911 it's a new car to learn and master. The Cayman is easy to drive and doesn't take much mastering, the 911 requires a bit more focus and makes things interesting. The 991 in any guise is a nicer car to drive as a daily, doesn't look as awkward as the Cayman in it's aesthetics and the 3.8 is a fantastic engine.
