Hi i have a 2015 Toyota Aygo and since buying it i've noticed that there are quite a lot of times when it struggles to start, it has always started but sometimes it's a real effort (if that makes sense). Most other cars i've had start up straight away. It just seems unusual and makes me wonder if there is an issue with the engines on these cars or if i'm doing something wrong?

Is the battery in good condition?

Is it worse from a cold start, or does it do it when starting after already warmed up?

Is it up to date in terms of servicing, oil level, plugs, etc?

It doesn't seem to matter whether it's cold or not, it's been serviced as per the recommended amount. Not physically checked the battery....

Immobiliser- key coding issue or using a different (replacement) key?

I replaced one of my keys to an Aygo I owned and forgot to transfer the transponder over (it was a very small chip). So, I could open/start with one key and not start with the new one.

The keys are the original ones, no issue with opening and locking etc.
I will check the battery, what should i look out for?

Something large and black, in the top right hand corner of the engine bay

as per the other comment on here, check the two wires are secure on the two poles of the battery.

if the battery is >5 years old, it may well be past its best, particularly if the car regularly does short trips (which a car like an aygo is pretty much designed to do). a new one won't be expensive for an aygo given the small engine. you could also try a battery conditioner / charger if you have access to one (you can get basic ones for about £20).

My wife's Yaris has the same engine and it used to do it if you just turned the key straight through position 2 to start. Turn the key to position 2, wait a few seconds, then start. I think the fuel pump takes a little while to wake up!

A few times I’ve experienced similar and ruled out the battery it’s been a faulty crank or cam position sensor.

I got the battery checked at Halfords and they said it was fine. The thing I could add is when it struggles to start once I’ve pushed the accelerator down a bit that usually helps it start….

That used to work back in the day with carbs but it will do nothing with ecu controlled fi and fly by wire throttle which yours likely has too.

does the start spin over at normal speed and it just takes too long to start ....or it spins much slower /sounds like flat battery?
