Just sold a car (private hire) for spares or repairs on FB listed numerous faults, put mileage in excess of 400,000 Years MOT. Agree £450 cash. Gets picked up and the drivers says injectors are on the way out and knocks me back a hundred. I just want rid as I have a new car. Message this morning to say all the injectors are leaking and the turbo has gone! Wants his money back biggrin Do I just block him or tell him to do one?

Cars was running fine last week covering approx 1,000miles a week.

If your advert was honest with the faults, just tell him to do one.

Did he sign the logbook in trade, or give any indication he was "trade"? If so, he's deemed as "the expert" in this transaction.

In any case, it's a £450 (less discount) car with 12 months MoT. He's done well for it to last the journey home. Unlucky for him. Block, ignore and move on.

edit: by giving him money off he probably thinks you're an easy target and if you agree to a refund he will ask you for some extra cash back instead.

So he's not scrapping it then?
Sounds like he was going to punt it on.

This reminds me of a thread from 6-8 weeks ago. Same buyer or just same MO?

I have just this week sold a car to a legitimate scrap company as I didn't want any come back due to the car needing various bits doing to it.

A quick Google of scrap my car brought up several options, filled in their online form and waited for a few quotes to come back to me.

The car was an 08 1.6 lancer in average condition bodywork wise but with an intermittent engine management light coming on and what felt like a engine mount needing doing.

It cost us £800 three years ago and hasnt needed much doing to it but it was at the point of either spend a shed load on it or replace it so we decided to get a new car.

Highest bid was £350 and whilst we may have got more on eBay or market place it would be a hell of a pain in the backside.

Recovery truck was booked for between 8am and 10am Monday, he was here at 7:45 and loaded with money in my bank by 8am with zero comebacks.

He’s swapped your good turbo for his broken one hoping you’ll just take it back and he’s got a free turbo out of it.

Exactly why all my sheds will be going to scrap from now on, cannot be dealing with entitled idiots like this who think they are getting a brand new car with warranty for £500.

I would rather lose a couple of hundred quid and scrap it, safe in the knowledge it has gone and I will never hear back again.

My ex sold her knackered old Golf MK4 a few years ago for a couple hundred quid.

Started getting speeding fines through with pictures of it zipping about for months on end.

I strongly suspect all the answers will be pointing one way on this. I’m amazed you even gave him some money off at all. Any more contact with him and he’ll see you as such a soft target.

This, sadly...

Though the irony being, I'm the guy who trawls the classifieds wondering why you can buy anything semi-usable for under a grand these days but I guess it's the vicious circle. I no longer entertain selling sheds / end of life / problem cars through the classifieds and instead, opt to go through a reputable company who'll arrive, pay and take it away with no hassle or come back as it's simply not worth the hassle. Too many out there want champagne for lemonade money.

I gave the last couple of sheddy cars a go via owners groups and even that was a total hassle. First being a running but poorly XC90 diesel that I was offered £575 via a salvage company but offered it as spares or repairs, no test drives (wasn't safe) and the like and basically match their quote and take it away and still it was "Can I give you a deposit / will you keep it till March" plus all the resident experts telling me that no way would I get £575 for it in its current state. I did and it was collected next day, bank transfer... done.

Also offered my sisters sheddy V50 as spares or repair, MOT failure but still running and again just hassle via messages (can nobody call these days?) plus a guy who'd definitely take it but lo and behold, never arrived then said could I wait till the weekend etc. In the end it went to scrap for £175 and I kept the alloys and sold them for £150 so was actually £25 up compared to selling it complete and risking endless messages about how the aircon isn't ice cold or how they've checked the MOT history and it was advised for a tyre in 2007 and they want a refund.

It's just not worth the hassle any more but in this case and others, you and the buyer need to be clear on where the car is headed... just because it's a scrappy doesn't mean that's the end of the road for it, some may of these types may legitimately look to resell it on or some may state it'll be scrapped and offer accordingly but then look to resell and others may actually scrap, as in stripped for parts then crushed with a certificate of destruction so in most cases it's seller beware and do your research and ensure the quote and the process reflects what they promise. Him simply saying "Yeah mate, I'm a scrappy" doesn't always mean the car is going through the baler then sold as frag.

Seems odd to me, putting a fresh MOT on a car and then selling it as a non-runner to someone who turns up and drives it away.

But leaving that aside, if it's a genuine private sale and fairly described there's no comeback for the buyer.

That was my initial thought. It happened to a relative once, on a Hilux that allegedly had a broken prop. You could still see the spanner scrapes and wd40 stains where the original had been swapped over, when he went to see the problem for himself.

I bet he knocked the £100 off originally, as he was also going to swap the injectors, but now had to buy some.

In contrast...
I buy shed cars and run them till they die. Then sell them on ebay/facebook for whatever i can get for them. Not had any hassle with any of them beyond a few "will you take £50 and an XBox" messages which i ignore. My Alfa went to a guy who drove the four hours down from near London to collect it, the Saab went to a couple of large Polish guys who offered £200 (for a £250 car) which i took, the Citroen went for what I'd paid for it 5 years previously (£150) to a guy who got the train from Southampton to collect it.
I would have no qualms about doing it again when the next one comes to the end of its useful (to me) life. I'd rather they don't get scrapped, as they all too often get crushed especially for things that are relatively unusual and will take to time to move on as parts. I'd rather they were cannibalized and kept more examples on the road.

Your thread subject says 'Scrappy' - was it sold to a registered scrapyard (with the 'scrap' section of the V5 filled in), or was it a private sale? Either way, see the sticky at the top of the forum: https://www.pistonheads.com/gassing/topic.asp?h=0&...

You give the whole V5 to the scrapper - it says this on the V5 itself.
