A newbie to Porsches here. Been lurking Autotrader watching prices rise. First focused on manuals but when I think of it, for my personal needs, I'd drive an automatic much more often than a manual. I'm looking to buy a car to use and enjoy, not keep in the garage.

Prices for 997.2s seem to be very strong - although the PDKs seem relatively cheaper because of the higher number.

But for another 10K additional one can get a 997.1 Turbo but in Tiptronic.

Seen a Jayemm video + comments recently suggesting the Turbo in Tip is pretty decent. Anyone lived with one?

Would the upgrades of the 997.2 outweigh the performance etc of the 997.1 Turbo in terms of driving enjoyment?

Its all personal I know, but appreciate your views, especially if you have owned one. It's a big chunk of money, hard to part with it!

This is one I have seen online locally - dealer bought it from auction, which raises a question

At that price I'd only buy from a specialist, safe in the knowledge they've went through it with a fine tooth comb and will put a decent warranty behind it, not some aftermarket one.

Looks more worn than it's mileage would suggest in some of those pics. I don't mean it's been clocked, but it doesn't look particularly well cared for. Might just be the pics.

History is everything!

Yeah fair point. It's so hard finding 911s that have been looked after. Even ones at the specialists, when you look up the MOT history, they will have fails for all sorts of reasons suggesting premature wear and tear along the way. Have access through a mate to a software that gives me details of prior MOT fails, so with 4-5 owners, hard to cover up.

Is it just the current market, or do there seem to be very few 997.2 PDKs around? All I am seeing is around 65-70K, vs 55-60K for the Tiptronic.

911 Virgin has just sold a really good 997.2 GTS (mine) for much less than that and it had 15 months Porsche warranty on it.

Mezger Turbo engines do not use the crap autobox from the N/A cars - many owners enjoy it, it’s a Mercedes unit and I can understand why it suits the turbo (I have a 996 turbo in Spanish trim)

I can’t see many 997.2 GTS PDKs on the market - only one at £60K which is similar money to the 997.1 Turbo Tiptronic or £7K less than a Turbo PDK.

Yes exactly it really seems to divide opinion which is why it seems as the Tiptronic Turbo ages it keeps losing value - with the cheapest examples around £50K. But those who own it often seem to praise it.

Tiptronic though.
PDK is joyless as it is let (in my opinion) alone Tiptronic. May as well just take the bus at that rate.

Of what is out there I would go for either, assuming you want automatic (from the thread title)

https://www.autotrader.co.uk/car-details/202112110...

fully loaded and with 19" RS Spyder Alloys which were incredibly rare on the 997 Turbo

or if manual is an option, this Dark Green Metallic on truffle brown

Thanks mate appreciate and both look really nice - just too much of a stretch for me and I wouldn’t enjoy it as a daily, be too paranoid about retaining value.

Not sure if this one is too modified and high mileage

ah so manual is an option for you then. That one looks very nice. I do like the truffle brown interior on these 10+ year old cars as they have gained some patina. New brown looks odd to me, worn in brown looks great in my opinion.

Yep that one reads good. but, even though its got a deposit on it, i would enquire on this one...

https://www.pistonheads.com/buy/listing/9442719

....with buckets, less miles, great reputed dealer, and just that bit better for less than £10% more...even if gone (but check) you can use that as a benchmark.

Haha cheers mate will ask about that one at Romans. The only way manual is an option is if it was unusually cheap and I could buy a cheap as chips auto to keep as a third car.

Have you by any chance driven the Turbo and compared it to the GTS you had? Even the GTS seems quite limited edition but having driven neither, hard to compare! Cheers

Yes. The Turbo felt fast but sterile.

I went back to a 997 GTS from a 991 because I wanted a car that felt like 911s of old. The 7GTS had that in spades.

If the price a concern, then also consider a nice manual 996 turbo - even rawer experience and a bargain buy!
