I'm looking at a 2003 Z4 3.0i auto. Car seems good, low miles, good service history. Its going through a trade auction. The car has a couple of issues though that i'd like to have a rough budget for repairing.

  • The electric hood isnt working.
  • The power steering is heavy, and there is an amber power steering light on in the dash.
Any thoughts on what those could typically be, and approx spend?

I'm starting to google them but would appreciate any real world experience from the collective here smile

The electric hood is a problem plagued early Z4s it’s water ingress that takes it out, there was a guy on the Z4 forum who used to repair them and change the location to the boot. He charged £650 from memory. He is called Mike and lives in St Helen’s (ducklakeview) is his site name

For experiences, I'd suggest asking here: https://z4-forum.com/ (if you haven't already)

Sounds like electric power steering column failures are not uncommon in that age of Z4.

You can get it moved for about £150 now that people have worked out how to do it without taking the roof off, once it's in the boot you can get at it easily to get it working.

Mike isn't on Z4forum anymore but if you search for zedshed in Cheshire he is on Facebook.

Or head to Z4 forum and search for roof motors. There are people in Hook, Hampshire, Bristol and Durham who can often revive dead motors and will relocate them to the boot for much less than that. And a couple of members in Lincoln and Norfolk who have moved them so might be willing to do others.
