I have searched for this on google, couldn’t find anything.
I’ve got an old x5 2006 and it looks like this on my cameras.

But it looks fine to the eye (to me)

Are the night vision cams helpful if telling if a cars been repainted?
Same view in daytime.

Whatever angle I park at, that door always looks different at night

Does it matter? Most used cars have been painted at some point in their lives

It’s a 16 year old car, I’d be amazed if it hadn’t been painted

Not that unusual for repainted panels to stand out in some lighting conditions.

If you want to be more certain then you could try looking for masking lines in the door shuts, a paint thickness gauge or a spectrophotometer (some paint supplying motor factors will have these) & see what shows up.

Interesting

I think the point of the thread is not "OMG my 15 yo car might have been repaired" but rather "is this a potentially useful way to detect repairs on a car you might be thinking of buying?"

I guess yes, I can't think of any other reason it would show up differently on the infra-red image.

Can night vision cameras pick up that a panel has been (re)painted?

What does it matter? All cars get painted at some point in their lives...
Classic PistonHeads answer there.

Always used to be the case that red cars looked like patchwork quilts under sodium street lamps. Sadly now all of ours have been replaced with short-throw white LEDs.

So all these years of avoiding buying cars in anything bar daylight were wrong ? !

Could a phone camera or similar show this also ? Could be handy if viewing a newer vehicle.

I wonder if it was repainted in single stage vs base and clear? T-cut will tell you, unless it's metallic in which case, don't get t-cut anywhere near it

Some colours will show different under different light.

Back in the 90's Ford had a Red called Radiant Red. Under orange streetlamps you could see repainted panels.

As per above a red car will show up under yellow streetlights. Black ones need direct sun on them to show.
Dunno about blue, maybe CCTV is the way forward with this colour.......
