Do 2nd hand dealers usually allow payment via credit card, and if so is there normally a charge that the customer has to pay?

We are looking for a 2nd hand car between £5k - £8k, whilst we have the funds in Premium Bonds it will take a few days to cash them in and for the money to get paid into my account, so if we see a car in the meantime would a credit card normally be accepted? Once we have the money in the bank we could use debit card or bank transfer.

Sellers aren't allowed to add charges to cover credit card fees (although some still do), so probably just won't accept it.

Could you not put a deposit down and collect when you've got the money in your bank.

Brought 2 cars in the last year with a visa and Mastercard credit card, neither time did the dealer add a visible charge.

Legal or not some dealers do state a percentage overhead for credit cards.

If possible it is always a good move IMO to purchase using a credit card even if you have the funds. The use of the card gives the purchaser a lot of protection so if things go pear shaped get the credit card company involved and IME they are very good at getting a favorable resolve.

Thanks. I can borrow the cash from parents until my funds have landed in my bank, but if buying from a garage I'd pay by credit card if possible.
